Two HVAC students repeat as national scholarship recipients
Thursday, August 20, 2020
Two of five $5,000 scholarships recently awarded by the National Association of Oil and Energy Service Professionals and its co-sponsors have benefited the same pair of Pennsylvania College of Technology students as last year.
Scholarships have again gone to Peter W. Bennett, of Sea Cliff, New York, and Ian H. West, of Hummelstown. Bennett is enrolled in the two-year heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology major; West is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in heating, ventilation and air conditioning design technology.
The Dave Nelsen Scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of an OESP member as a way to recognize his commitment to education. The fund benefits students in the HVAC-refrigeration or plumbing field who are currently attending (or planning to attend) a technical college or trade school that includes oil heat in its overall curriculum.
“Both Ian and Peter are outstanding role-model students that strive for excellence and integrity in the classroom as well as with fellow students and constituents. They will be a great asset to the essential HVAC industry,” said Kenneth E. Welker Jr., a heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology lecturer. “Congratulations on a job well done!”
Among the criteria for consideration, applicants must write 500-word essays highlighting how their educational background has prepared them for success in their chosen profession. Candidates are also asked to share where they see themselves careerwise in five to 10 years.
“We are extremely proud of the 2020 Dave Nelsen Scholarship recipients,” OESP President Scott Vadino said. “These individuals are the best of the best applicants, and we are confident that they will continue the legacy of Dave Nelsen.”
Bennett’s scholarship was co-sponsored by OESP’s New York City and Westchester chapters, while West’s was awarded through the South Central Pennsylvania Energy Association.
Penn College’s HVAC program is accredited by the Partnership for Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Accreditation; endorsed by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America; and approved as a training site for the National Oilheat Research Alliance.
