Penn College basketball teams shine

Both the Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s basketball teams tasted victory last week as their seasons of improvement continued.



Men’s basketball
Hosting Penn State Abington in North Eastern Athletic Conference play Wednesday, the visitors took a 41-28 halftime lead and went on for a 78-64 victory. Ben Sosa, of Loyalsock Township, led the Wildcats with 16 points while Elijah Vazquez, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, scored 12 points and Brody Baker, of Lock Haven, added 11 points. Abington led in points in the paint 50-26 and in points off turnovers 22-8.

Saturday on the road, Sosa ripped the cords for a personal career-high 35 points on 14 of 19 shooting from the floor and hitting 5 of 6 foul shots as Penn College topped Penn State Berks for the second time this season, 87-79, to improve to 6-14 overall, 4-7 in the conference and 4-4 in the NEAC South Division. The six wins are double what the Wildcats have had in each of the past two seasons.

Sosa, who also led the Wildcats with 12 rebounds, had five assists and four blocked shots, as he became the first Penn College men’s player in two years to score in the 30s and his total was the highest by any Wildcat since the 2016-17 season. Also in double digits for Penn College was Damon Kreider, of Landisville, with 14 points. The Wildcats, who hit 54 percent of their field goals, outscored Berks 50-24 in the paint.

“Individually, Ben Sosa stepped up his game (and) was an outstanding floor leader for us. He was phenomenal for the full game offensively and defensively,” coach Geoff Hensley said.

In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week (records through Sunday): Host Lancaster Bible College (10-10 overall, 8-3 NEAC), 5 p.m. Wednesday; host SUNY Poly (11-9 overall, 8-3 NEAC), 1 p.m. Saturday.

Statistically speaking in the NEAC: Ryan Lockman, of White Salmon, Washington, is No. 1, hitting 63.3% of his field goal attempts. Carson Garvis, of Taneytown, Maryland, is eighth, with 7.3 rebounds per game. Vazquez is ninth in 3-point shooting percentage at 39.6 and tied for 14th, averaging 2.8 assists per game. Sosa is ninth, averaging 16.4 points per game, and ninth, with 7.1 rebounds per game.

Women’s basketball
En route to earning their first five-win season since 2014-15, the Wildcats outscored Penn State Abington 42-27 in the middle periods at home Wednesday on their way to a 64-57 win that upped their overall record to 5-13 and North Eastern Athletic Conference mark to 2-8 – the latter reaching a conference win mark last achieved in 2017-18. Cassie Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, led Penn College with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Lydia Albert, of Trout Run, chipped in with 13 points and Tori Wolfe, of Dalmatia, added 11 points. After trailing by 21, Abington battled back to within two points with under three minutes to play in the game before the Wildcats hit 4 of 6 foul shots down the stretch for the knockout punch.

At Penn State Berks Saturday, Penn College lost, 76-53, dropping to 5-14 overall and 2-9 in the NEAC. Berks jumped to a 32-12 lead after one quarter and led 49-20 at the half. Wolfe and Albert each scored 14 points for the Wildcats – Albert also had 11 rebounds – and Makaya Shadle, of Galeton, added 11 points. Berks led in points off turnovers 34-15.

Statistically speaking in the NEAC: Ja’Quela Dyer, of Dover, Delaware, is tied for No. 1, averaging 9.1 rebounds per game; tied for No. 2, with 1.4 blocks per game; and No. 13, hitting 41.7% of her field goal shots. Kuhns is tied for No. 3, averaging 8.3 rebounds per game; tied for No. 9, hitting 42.5% of her field goal shots; and No. 19, averaging 11.9 points per game. Madison Klock, of Elysburg, is tied for fourth, averaging 3.9 assists per game, and tied for ninth, averaging two steals per game. Albert is sixth, hitting 36.5% of her 3-point shots.

Wrestling
Sunday at the RIT Tiger Duals, Penn College lost to the host team, 51-0, and to Oneonta State, 41-12, to drop to 6-19 overall. Winners for the Wildcats included Erik Schreck, of Northampton, at 157 pounds on a fall, and Jalen Edwards, of Horsham, at 197 on an injury default.

Gilmour named to DIII Presidents Council
Tuesday, it was announced that college President Davie Jane Gilmour has been appointed to serve on the NCAA Division III Presidents Council, the highest governing body for Division III athletics.

Gilmour, who has served on the NCAA Division III Chancellors/Presidents Advisory Group, began serving her four-year term in January.

The Presidents Council establishes and directs the general policy of Division III and establishes its strategic plan. It also may make recommendations to the Board of Governors on matters related to Division III championships and approve the use of funds allocated to the division.
