Penn College men get first NEAC win of season

In action last week for three Pennsylvania College of Technology winter sports teams, only the men’s basketball team came away with a win.



Men’s basketball
Wednesday in a home NEAC game, the Wildcats lost to Penn State Harrisburg, 100-52, in the first meeting between the two since 2012 and the first-ever clash in conference action. Carson Garvis, of Taneytown, Maryland, led Penn College with 14 points.

Saturday at Penn State Abington, Penn College scored its first conference win of the season, 92-78, to go to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in the NEAC. The Wildcats came through in a big way during the first half as they opened a 51-33 lead. Ben Sosa, of Loyalsock Township, led the offense with 23 points while Elijah Vazquez, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, scored 22 points and Ryan Lockman, of White Salmon, Washington, 21 points. Sosa and Lockman each had eight rebounds.

In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week (records through Sunday): Host Penn State Berks (1-12 overall, 1-4 NEAC), 5 p.m. Tuesday; host Gallaudet University (2-12 overall, 2-3 NEAC), 2 p.m. Saturday.

Last meeting vs. Penn State Berks: Lost 88-85 on Feb. 13. (4-6 lifetime).
Last meeting vs. Gallaudet University: Lost 79-75 on Feb. 16. (1-7 lifetime).

NEAC South Division standings (through Sunday): Penn State Harrisburg 2-0, Penn College 1-1, Lancaster Bible College 1-1, Gallaudet University 1-1, Penn State Berks 1-1, Penn State Abington 0-2.

NEAC North Division standings (through Sunday): SUNY Cobleskill 2-0, SUNY Poly 2-0, Morrisville State College 1-1, Cazenovia College 1-1, Keuka College 0-2, Wells College 0-2.

Statistically speaking in the NEAC: Lockman is No. 1, hitting 60% of his field goal attempts. Sosa is 13th, averaging 15.1 points per game, and ninth, with 7.3 rebounds per game. Garvis is eighth, with 7.5 rebounds per game, and 13th in 3-point shooting percentage at 38.8.

Women’s basketball
Facing Penn State Harrisburg for the first time ever, the Wildcats saw a seven-point, 51-44, lead disappear in the second half of a 73-69 loss Wednesday. Madison Klock, of Elysburg, led four Penn College players scoring in double figures with 17 points while Maci Ilgen, of Spring Mills, had 15 points and 10 rebounds; Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, 13 points; and Ja’Quela Dyer, of Dover, Delaware, 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats made just half of their 28 foul shot attempts.

At Penn State Abington on Saturday, the home team used two strong middle periods – outscoring Penn College 47-29 – en route to a 68-53 win that dropped the Wildcats to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Kuhns led Penn College with 22 points and eight rebounds. Abington led in points in the paint 40-28 and in points off turnovers 27-9.

Statistically speaking in the NEAC: Kuhns is No. 1, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game; No. 8, hitting 44.3 % of her field goal shots; and No. 18, averaging 12.1 points per game. Lydia Albert, of Trout Run, is 15th, hitting 30.6% of her 3-point shots.

Wrestling
Saturday in the Mid-Winter Classic at Liberty Arena, the Wildcats went 0-4 – with three of the losses by a total of five points – to drop to 5-13 overall. In match results, scores were: Gettysburg College, 25-23; vs. McDaniel College, 24-22; vs. Muhlenberg College, 38-15; vs. Johns Hopkins University, 25-24. For Penn College, Erik Schreck, of Northampton, ended the day 2-0 at 149 and 157 pounds while Ryan Bauer, of Denton, Maryland, at 133; Jared Mooney, of Palmerton, at 184; and Brendan McGinley, of Glenmoore, at 285 all finished 3-1. Schreck and Bauer each had two wins by fall.
