Penn College basketball teams set for conference play

Pennsylvania College of Technology basketball squads split in their only games Thanksgiving week while the college’s wrestlers were idle. For the basketball teams, North Eastern Athletic Conference play begins Saturday at SUNY Cobleskill.



Men’s basketball
Hosting Elmira College on Tuesday, Fred Young, of Waterbury, Connecticut, scored 27 points, including five 3s, as Penn College posted an 84-77 nonconference win. It was the Wildcats’ second victory in three years against Elmira.

Trailing by eight points with just under seven minutes to play, Penn College went on a 23-8 run to close out the game and improve to 2-4 overall. Also scoring in double figures for the Wildcats were Elijah Vazquez, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, with 19 points; Carson Garvis, of Taneytown, Maryland, with 15; and Ben Sosa, of Loyalsock Township, with 13.

In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week (records through Sunday): At SUNY Cobleskill (3-1 overall), 1 p.m. Saturday.

Last meeting vs. SUNY Cobleskill: Lost 87-79 on Feb. 2. (1-5 lifetime).

Women’s basketball
At nonconference crosstown rival Lycoming College on Tuesday, the home team rolled to a 30-7 first-quarter lead and coasted from there in a 99-59 win, dropping Penn College to 1-4.

Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, led the Wildcats with 16 points while, coming off the bench, Olivia Johnson, of Shavertown, added 12 points and Lydia Albert, of Trout Run, scored 10 while Maci Ilgen, of Spring Mills, hauled in 10 rebounds. Lycoming led in points in the paint 52-22, points off turnovers 28-10 and fast-break points 31-7.

Lycoming leads the series that dates to 1978, 17-1. Penn College’s lone win came in 1978.

In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week (records through Sunday): At SUNY Cobleskill (2-4), 3 p.m. Saturday.
