Women’s basketball
In a first-round tournament game Saturday, Penn College battled tough against College of St. Elizabeth, knotting the score at 46 with 6:15 to play. But St. Elizabeth outscored the Wildcats 18-7 the rest of the way for a 64-53 win. Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, led Penn College with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Madison Klock, of Elysburg, added 11 points and seven boards. St. Elizabeth held a 30-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Sunday, the Wildcats fought back in the second half against York College to end a loss string that began Dec. 16. The team’s last November win came in the 2017 opener, which also was its last home win. Penn College now is 1-3 this season.

Trailing 39-27 at halftime, after being outscored 24-10 in the second quarter, Penn College rallied with an 18-6 advantage in the third quarter to tie the game at 45-all and took the lead for good at 54-53 with 5:06 remaining. Lydia Albert, of Trout Run, came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 20 points while Tori Wolfe, of Dalmatia, scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds and Kuhns had 10 points and 17 rebounds. For her effort, Albert was named to the all-tournament team. Penn College led in points off turnovers 20-12.

Men’s basketball
Hosting nonconference foe Alvernia University on Tuesday, the Wildcats fell behind 42-36 at the half and lost, 85-65. Ryan Lockman, of White Salmon, Washington, led Penn College with 19 points while Ben Sosa, of Loyalsock Township, notched a double-double with 16 points and team-high 11 rebounds. Statistically, the biggest difference came from 3-point land as Alvernia connected on 10 shots and the Wildcats three.

At crosstown rival Lycoming College on Saturday, the home team used a 10-0 run to end the game and pull away to a 71-60 victory. The 11-point final margin was the smallest in 13 encounters between the two city teams since Lycoming – which has won every time – took the inaugural matchup in 2005 by two points. Fred Young, of Waterbury, Connecticut, topped Penn College with 16 points as the Wildcats dropped to 1-4. Penn College held a 48-35 edge in rebounds during the game, but Lyco led in points off turnovers 19-4.
