Penn College flag football squad runs out of gas against Lyco
Tuesday, November 19, 2019
Penn College had barely arrived for Monday night's extramural flag football game against Lycoming College when the host opened the scoring: a fourth-down touchdown on its very first possession and the point after for a hasty 7-0 lead. Penn College responded with a long TD pass of its own, connecting on the extra point to tie the game. Lycoming quickly struck again, scoring on a single play to take a 13-7 lead after a failed PAT attempt. Not to be outdone, Penn College put together an impressive scoring drive (extra point included) for a 14-13 lead. Again, however, it only took one pass for Lycoming to answer, converting on the two-point conversion to end the half with a 21-14 edge.
The seesaw matchup picked up in the third quarter where it left off, with the visitors scoring on their second possession of the second half, but Penn College couldn’t snag an extra point. Lycoming led 21-20, and its quick-strike offense delivered after three plays to extend the lead to 28-20. Penn College looked to rebound, but was intercepted on its next possession; Lycoming’s offense again struck in one play, then added the extra point to make the score 35-20 with under two minutes to play.
Penn College – down, but not out – drove the length of the field and added the extra point to make the score 35-27 with a minute and a half remaining. Believing the game was over, Lycoming charged downfield ... and, when it threw a lackadaisical pass, Penn College picked it off in the end zone. Needing to get to the opposite end of the field within 60 seconds, Penn College did just that, scoring at 0:33. Unfortunately, the point-after conversion failed and the score remained 35-33 in Lycoming's favor.
Lycoming had one last possession and the Penn College players were hoping to generate a turnover, but their gamble on an interception failed and Lycoming scored a last-second touchdown to end the game at 41-33 and dash any hope of a dramatic Penn College comeback.
In the game for Penn College were Jahmel Blunt, Josh Gannon, Aaron Marth, Byron Matthews, Hutson Metzger, Glen Molitoris, Andy Pick, Jason Rauch, Jared Swedar and Nick Tolland.
