Faculty research measures scholars’ contributions

Monday, October 28, 2019

A Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty member recently presented research at the 23rd International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries.

Spyke M. Krepshaw, assistant professor of web and interactive media, presented “Gatekeeper: Quantifying the Impacts of Service to the Scientific Community,” at Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway on Sept. 10.

Spyke M. KrepshawThe paper, co-written by Dongwon Lee, associate professor of information sciences and technology at Penn State, was one of 16 full papers (and 12 short papers) selected from 75 submissions. It was also published in the conference proceedings.

Krepshaw and Lee devised a model of a digital library that helps to quantify the impacts of scholars’ service to the scientific community. In his prototype, called “Gatekeeper,” Krepshaw focuses on scholars’ service on technical program committees for computer science conferences. Because technical program committee members are responsible for critically reviewing research articles and contributing to the decision to accept or reject articles for presentation, they act as “gatekeepers” to the dissemination of new knowledge.

“Collecting and quantifying their impacts of service is critical,” Krepshaw wrote.

A “digital library” is an organized collection of electronic documents. Krepshaw’s “Gatekeeper” digital library logs the service of more than 134,000 scholars for 7,400 conferences.

Krepshaw, who holds a master’s degree in instructional technology from Bloomsburg University, plus two associate degrees and two bachelor’s degrees from Penn College in data communications and networking and web and applications development, joined the faculty at Penn College full time in 2013. He previously was executive director of web development at Lycoming College, chief aesthetics officer for AmerITGrads, and a web designer and adjunct instructor for Penn College.
