Penn College appoints dean of curriculum, instruction

Joanna K. Flynn has been named dean of curriculum and instruction at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Flynn, who most recently served as associate professor of mathematics, has been employed at the college since 2003. She is the recipient of the highest teaching honor presented to a Penn College faculty member – the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award – as well as the President’s Award for Outstanding Assessment of Student Learning.



Joanna K. FlynnFlynn’s administrative experience at the college includes work as assistant dean-programs in the former School of Integrated Studies (now the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications), director of mathematics and general education, and mathematics department head. She also served on the school’s leadership team for several years.

Before coming to Penn College, Flynn was a lecturer in management science at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, and an instructor of mathematics at Gulliver Preparatory School, Miami.

As dean of curriculum and instruction, Flynn’s primary responsibilities will include oversight of all curriculum and instruction processes, new faculty development, and faculty evaluation.

“Joanna presents outstanding curricula, pedagogical and leadership skills, coupled with an extraordinary work ethic,” said Michael J. Reed, vice president for academic affairs/provost. “Her demonstrated performance within the classroom, on committees and when in leadership roles, has earned the respect of the campus community. We are excited to have Joanna in this pivotal role.”

Flynn holds a Master of Science in operations research and applied statistics, as well as a Bachelor of Science in political science and economics from the University of Miami.

Her committee experience at Penn College includes the Core Education Implementation Committee (chair), Core Curriculum Review Committee (chair), Curriculum Committee, Quality Through Assessment, Excellence in Academic Advising Committee, and the Foundations of Excellence Task Force. She has also served on College Council for the college’s Internal Governance system.
