Michael J. Reed has been appointed vice president for academic affairs and provost at Pennsylvania College of Technology, effective July 1. His appointment was approved Thursday by the Penn College Board of Directors.
Reed, who has been employed at Penn College since 2014, had been serving as vice president for academic operations and associate provost. Previously, he was dean, interim dean and assistant dean of the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications.
Before coming to Penn College, Reed was head principal at Williamsport Area High School and served as the director of SciTech High School, a STEM magnet school partnering with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.
He succeeds Paul L. Starkey, who will return to teaching; Starkey joins the business administration faculty at the college this fall.
In his new role, Reed will oversee all academic operations at the college. He will continue to serve as a member of President’s Council and will chair Deans’ Council.
“Mike has a wealth of experience in educational administration at both the secondary and postsecondary levels,” President Davie Jane Gilmour said. “He is a proven leader and innovator, making him well-suited to lead and inspire faculty at this institution. I welcome the energy, ideas and commitment he brings to this new role.”
Reed completed his doctoral studies through Drexel University with a concentration in educational leadership, focusing on innovation, sustainable systems and evidence-based professional development models.
He also holds a master’s degree and school counseling certification from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His school administrative certifications were awarded through The Pennsylvania State University, and he earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education from Clarion University.
A Pittsburgh native, Reed serves as vice chair on The Salvation Army of Williamsport’s Advisory Board, has provided mentorship and professional development to K-12 leadership teams throughout the state, and has assisted multiple youth-development programs throughout the Williamsport community.
