Student selected for Northwestern Mutual development program

Pennsylvania College of Technology business administration student Dianna R. Weaver, who is completing an internship with Northwestern Mutual, has been selected for the company’s Next Level Development program.
Interns selected for the program have written 10 or more life insurance policies during their intern year and plan to continue to work for the company.
Weaver, of Morris, has been interning as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual for nearly a year, completing the same duties as a full-time financial representative. Working under the guidance of an experienced mentor, she develops clients and helps them to devise a financial plan to meet their goals. As part of the requirements to work as a Northwestern Mutual intern, she secured the Pennsylvania Life Accident and Health license.
The Next Level Development Program includes a seven-week course that builds on the basics learned in initial training and teaches participants how to maintain the management side of a practice.
“This experience is setting me up well to begin running a full-time practice with Northwestern Mutual,” she said. “However, it has also taught me a great deal about the industry and about myself as a professional.”
Weaver is an active student, having served as a Student Ambassador, Student Government Association senator and Delta Mu Delta business honor society president.
“Before my leadership experiences on campus, I was rather quiet and reserved, especially in front of large groups,” she said. “The experience allowed me to get comfortable communicating with individuals and large numbers of people alike. This is huge for my internship, as I am constantly talking to and connecting with many different people. ... I owe this transformation to the opportunities I had to work on my leadership and communication skills across campus.”
Weaver plans to complete her bachelor’s degree in business administration: management concentration in May. She initially enrolled in the college’s two-year associate degree in business management.
“I wasn’t sure at the time what I wanted to do and knew I could do anything with that degree, but I fell in love with the program immediately and switched to the bachelor’s degree program within my first semester,” she said.
Her goals were further refined as she took finance courses, which inspired her to seek a career in finance and an internship with Northwestern Mutual.
“I am passionate about my time at the college because everything I have done in the past four years has set me up for a professional career in what has turned out to be my dream job,” she said. “From the education to the leadership opportunities, I have felt very prepared to conquer the challenges this internship and eventual career has and certainly will throw at me. … I went from not knowing what I wanted to do to having a full-time job lined up very early in my senior year.”
