Public Relations & Marketing at Pennsylvania College of Technology earned four honors in the 2019 CUPPIE Awards for Creative Excellence in Marketing and Communications in Education.
Penn College captured three Gold CUPPIE Awards and a single Bronze CUPPIE in the annual competition sponsored by CUPRAP (College and University Public Relations and Associated Professionals). A total of 34 schools and/or organizations received awards this year from more than 400 entries submitted. The awards were presented March 14 in Lancaster.
Gold CUPPIEs went to Penn College in the category of Electronic Media–In-House Video, for “Penn College Savors the Kentucky Derby;” in the Print–Agency Viewbooks category for the college’s institutional viewbook; and in the Print–Covers category for the cover of the Fall 2018 issue of Penn College Magazine. The college’s Bronze CUPPIE was awarded in the Advertising–Agency Outdoor category for a “Future Made by Hand”-themed billboard.
The “Penn College Savors the Kentucky Derby” video, produced by Thomas F. Speicher, writer/video producer, chronicled the behind-the-scenes preparation and participation of 28 culinary/hospitality students, 10 alumni and a faculty chef who worked as key members of the Levy Restaurants team at the 2018 Kentucky Derby. The group spent five days cooking for thousands of patrons at the prestigious clubs and suites at the iconic Churchill Downs racetrack.
The college’s viewbook, produced in collaboration with the Philadelphia-based branding firm 160 over 90, featured bold design elements from the college’s branding campaign. College staff contributing to the effort were: Carlos Ramos, director of strategic marketing; Tina M. Miller, director of public relations and marketing; Park Williams, who retired as coordinator of digital publishing in January; and Larry D. Kauffman, digital publishing specialist/photographer.
The Fall 2018 Penn College Magazine cover captured gold for an illustration done by Kennedy L. Englert, of Williamsport, a graphic design student and intern for Public Relations & Marketing. The cover features a stylized depiction of a culinary student on horseback, with serving tray in hand. The magazine is edited by Jennifer A. Cline, writer/magazine editor, and the fall issue was designed by Deborah K. Peters, graphic designer.
The “Future Made by Hand” billboard capturing a Bronze CUPPIE for the college featured design work by Peters, photography from 160 over 90, and production work from Ramos and Kauffman. Depicting forest technology students in an outdoor lab, the billboard was placed along the busy U.S. Route 15 corridor near the college’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center campus, home to forest technology and other programs offered by the college’s School of Transportation & Natural Resources.
“We are so proud to see our colleagues so deservingly honored for their vision and execution,” said Patrick Marty, chief of staff and assistant to the president for college relations. “Tom Speicher’s storytelling compellingly captured the culinary ultramarathon that precedes ‘The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports,’ and Kennedy Englert showcased his companion cover story with her beautiful magazine cover illustration.”
“We are also pleased to celebrate our collaboration with 160 over 90 on the college’s new viewbook,” he added. “Oversized, textural and tactile, it is an authentic telling of Pennsylvania College of Technology’s hands-on, experiential educational philosophy. The book’s beautiful imagery gives life to the student experience here, and the accompanying marketing collateral – including outdoor – is as bold as it is on-brand and on-point.”
