Downtown walk ushers in 'Dream Week'

Penn College students and employees are encouraged to participate in "Dream Week" activities centered around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, beginning with a Peace Walk through downtown Williamsport on Saturday, Jan. 19.

The walk will form at First United Methodist Church, 604 Market St., at 10 a.m.; transportation will be provided from the Bush Campus Center Loop at 9:30. Refreshments and a musical celebration, "Lift Every Voice and Sing," will follow in the church.

"Dream Week"Other events, which carry an overall theme of "Awakening to Social Change," include:

Sunday, Jan. 20; 3-5 p.m.
"Alternatives to Violence" workshop at Christ Episcopal Church, 426 Mulberry St. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Inclement weather resulted in postponement of the workshop.)

Monday, Jan. 21; 9 a.m.-noon
"More Than a Meal" service project, Lycoming College Recreation Center
Don't make Monday a day off; make it a "day on" to benefit the local community! Volunteers will pack meal kits for distribution by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; refreshments and child care will be provided.

"An Evening with Damon Young" at Lycoming College's Clarke Chapel
With work that vacillates from anthropological satire and absurdist racial insights to razor-sharp cultural critique and unflinching indictments of privilege and bias, keynoter Young engages audiences in thoughtful contemplation of modern society. (Young's public appearance will be preceded by a professional development opportunity for Penn College employees – "Race, Culture and Politics in the Age of New Media" – from 3-4:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in Penn's Inn. Faculty and staff can register through the myPCT portal.)

"Dream Week" activities involve a partnership of both colleges, STEP Inc. AmeriCorps, the food bank and the Beloved Community Council.
