‘Why Science Matters’ Art Challenge seeks K-12 entries

Friday, November 30, 2018

Albert Einstein once said, “The greatest scientists are artists as well.”

Pennsylvania College of Technology and WVIA Public Media, producers of the “Working Class” public television series, invite elementary, middle and high school students to enter the “Why Science Matters K-12 Art Challenge.”

Students may choose any medium and supplies to create works of art that depict the importance of science in everyday life.  The inspiration for the challenge is the new documentary film “Working Class: Competition Drives Innovation! Why Science Matters,” which is available on demand through WVIA and PBS and on the show's website.

The deadline for entries has been extended to Feb. 1. Awards will be presented in two categories: K-sixth grade and grades seven-12. A chosen artist in each category will receive a basket of books and supplies related to the art challenge.

Entries will be accepted via email with a digital photo (JPEG file) of the original artwork attached. A separate email is required for each entry and must include the following information: challenge title (“Why Science Matters”); the artist’s name; teacher/parent name and email address; grade and school (or homeschool); city and state; entry category (Student in Grades K-Six or Student in Grades Seven-12); the title of the work; and a brief description.

Teachers and parents may email entries to Penny Lutz, director of The Gallery at Penn College.
