Calling all runners, hikers and walkers: The Community Challenge needs YOU!

The 2018 Community Challenge is set for Saturday, Nov. 10, and the Penn College community is invited to join the annual effort to raise funds for the Salvation Army of Williamsport. The event will feature challenging half marathon, 10K and 5K trail race options on the Williamsport Water Authority’s watershed property outside DuBoistown.

The Salvation Army Community Challenge“Runners, hikers and walkers are all welcome, and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Williamsport Salvation Army,” said Michael J. Reed, dean of the college’s School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications. An active organizer and participant in the Community Challenge, Reed serves as vice chairman and chair of PR/special events for the local Salvation Army Board of Directors.

Registration is limited and ends at 11:59 p.m. Nov. 7. Donations can also be made through the registration site.

Last year, the college captured the Community Cup, a traveling trophy presented to the organization with the greatest participation.

“Penn College will be one of several organizations competing for the Community Cup," Reed said. "So when registering, make sure to identify as a member of the Penn College team.”

Like last year, race awards in the form of ceramic trophies and holiday ornaments are being crafted by Penn College ceramics instructors David A. and Deborah L. Stabley.

Penn College is a sponsor of the nonprofit endeavor. The Salvation Army of Williamsport assists about 400 area families each month. The Community Challenge raises funds to support the organization’s tutoring, mentoring, food distribution, and financial planning and budgeting courses. In addition, proceeds are used to help families provide a gift for their children during the December holiday season. Last year’s Community Challenge raised about $17,000.
