Alexis I. Ashby, enrolled in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s School of Nursing & Health Sciences, has been selected as the October “Student of the Month.”
A resident of Williamsport, Ashby earned an associate degree in surgical technology in August.
She is employed full time by UPMC Susquehanna as a certified surgical technologist and is working toward a bachelor’s degree in applied health studies: surgical technology concentration. She is taking additional classes in hopes of pursuing a master’s in physician assistant studies after graduation.
“There have been countless occasions where she has gone above and beyond to accomplish her goals and help others,” her student nominator said. “Her work ethic and ability to achieve can be easily seen, as she maintains an astonishing 3.87 GPA while constantly working.”
Ashby represents her major on the college’s Surgical Technology Advisory Committee, has served as vice president of the Society of Student Surgical Technologists and volunteered at an annual campus Science Festival to share her chosen field with middle school pupils.
She received the UPMC Susquehanna Program Award for Surgical Technology and the Surgical Technology Outstanding Academic Achievement Award during summer commencement.
“Outside of school, she is consistently happy and personable. Her outgoing character and selfless nature shines as she is always assisting fellow classmates with homework and willing to make a difference any way she can,” her nominator continued. “Overall, Alexis is somebody who makes an impact on everything she does and everybody she meets, never allowing her overflowing schedule to disrupt her bright personality, academic standards or desire to help others.”
Student of the Month recognition is bestowed by the Student Government Association numerous times each academic year based on nominees’ commitment, service, role-model behavior, academics, leadership and campus involvement.
