The Community Arts Center, Lycoming College and Saint John's School of the Arts will again present the holiday classic, "The Nutcracker," this season.
More than 200 artists of all ages will comprise the totally homegrown talent for the production. The cast will include 112 dancers, age 4 to adult, and live music by Lycoming College students and local musicians.
The show follows the journey of a little girl who falls asleep on Christmas Eve after a party at her home and dreams herself into a fantastic world where toys become larger than life. Her beloved nutcracker comes to life and defends her from The Mouse King.
Continuing a year-end tradition at the community venue for over 50 years, the creative partnership will bring "The Nutcracker" to the CAC stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.
“For the last five years, I have done collaborations with Dr. William Ciabattari, director of bands at Lycoming College," noted Theresa Kendall, dance teacher/choreographer of Saint John's School of the Arts Dance Ensemble for 22 years. "Dr. Ciabattari has a passion and gift for bringing together our community to highlight the talent of all ages in his concerts – often including dance, visual art and multimedia.
"Last year, Dr. Ciabattari envisioned a full-length 'Nutcracker' with a live orchestra and dancers from our community. The support received from Sharon Mack and the Community Arts Center has been incredible. It was an exciting and fulfilling project, and was received with tremendous community support and enthusiasm.
"As a result, we are headed toward our second 'Nutcracker' this December! It is a blessing to be involved in such a beloved holiday favorite, bringing our entire community together in the gorgeous historic Community Arts Center. I hope everyone comes to see our show!”
This performance is part of the CAC’s Youth Educational Performance Series, designed to introduce and engage youth and young adults in the many activities available to them in the arts.
Tickets (starting at $15 plus applicable fees, with group pricing for those buying 10 or more) can be purchased at the Arts Center box office, online or by calling 570-326-2424.
