Book discussion prelude to WWI-themed colloquium

Monday, September 24, 2018

"A Long Long Way"A discussion of a celebrated World War I novel, dovetailing the next event in Penn College's Technology and Society Colloquia Series, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Madigan Library's second-floor reading loft. "Sebastian Barry's meticulously researched 'A Long Long Way' is a work of historical and lyric fiction. Set in Ireland and France and focused on the brutal impact of World War I (the Great War; the 'war to end war') on combatants, their families and the communities that sent soldiers to the front, Barry's work evokes parallels with personal accounts of the American Civil War and the U.S. experience in Vietnam," said Tom Zimmerman, associate professor of psychology and one of the evening's organizers. "Our discussion promises to be a far-ranging examination of the interplay between public and private aspirations, personal and cultural rituals, and the long reach of consequences both intended and unintended."
