Last Thursday’s scheduled softball doubleheader at Wilkes University was postponed until April 19. The 5-7 Wildcats now are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Susquehanna University and are slated to entertain Potsdam State at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elm Park.
Idle since playing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on March 8, the college’s 3-5 baseball team is set to return to action at noon Sunday at Bowman Field with a twin bill against Lebanon Valley College, and Wildcats coach Chris Howard is excited to return to the historic ballpark.
“It’s great on so many levels. One, it’s just a nice place to play, a great stadium. I tell everybody, including recruits, ‘You’re not going to see a better Division III complex.’ There are a lot of Division I schools that would like to have what we’re playing at. And now I tell them, ‘You are literally playing on a major league field because Major League Baseball came in and redid it so you could play major league games on it,’” Howard said.
“It’s a great opportunity for these kids to not only play in a really nice stadium with a really nice atmosphere, but to play on a surface that Major League Baseball players are playing on. It’s fun for the other teams that come in here, too. It’s a great place for everybody to come play a game,” Howard said.
“This year, I think more than in past years, we’re looking to manufacture a lot of runs. We’re going to be a lot more aggressive on the base paths than we probably have ever been, as opposed to sit back and wait for doubles in the gap. It’s a style of baseball that we can play, that this team can handle.
“When you play at Bowman Field in early April, it’s not like the ball is flying out of that yard, so there are other things that you have to do to be a little bit more offensive,” Howard added.
