Summit at Penn College to Explore Value of Industry Apprenticeships

Monday, March 5, 2018

An educational roundtable on the benefits of apprenticeships – closing skills gaps, retaining workers and attracting new employees – will be held May 3 at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Sponsored by Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College, the 2018 Apprenticeship Summit will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Penn’s Inn on the second floor of the Bush Campus Center. Experienced industry representatives and partners will discuss the processes of organizing, sponsoring, funding and providing apprenticeship programs.

Apprenticeship SummitThe keynote speaker will be Robert I. Lerman, a professional economist, Urban Institute fellow and leading expert on apprenticeships whose credentials include a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Apprenticeships provide a comprehensive, structured training mechanism that helps companies meet critical skill development needs,” said Christopher P. Ray, executive director of business development at Penn College. “Whether considering an apprenticeship program as part of a group or as a single company, the many facets of formation and execution can be daunting. This summit is designed to help companies understand apprenticeship structure and benefits, and also to learn about the many support mechanisms available to companies.”

Others on the agenda include Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour; Lori Renne and Alex Halper, Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry; Jim Nemeth, Autoneum; and Eric Ramsay, Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.

The afternoon session will feature an interactive program among participants, designed to provide companies with the opportunity – in one convenient location – to speak to representatives involved in all elements of apprenticeship.

The cost is $69 per person, lunch included. To register, visit the event website or call 570-327-4775.
