Getting their seasons underway in sunny, but cool, South Carolina, Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball and softball teams went a combined 3-2 in games over the weekend.
Baseball
A week after its opener was postponed due to bad weather at home, the Wildcats found the conditions more to their liking on Saturday in Myrtle Beach and came away with a 4-1 win over Lehman College. Penn College scored two runs in the first inning and added single runs in the sixth and seventh.
On Sunday, Penn College split against New England College, winning 2-1 in eight innings and losing 10-1 to go to 2-1 on the season. In the first game, pitchers Cody Nelson, of South Williamsport; Aaron Palmer, of Hanover; and Devon Sanders, of Bloomsburg, combined on a two-hitter. Nelson fanned four. Sanders got the win. On offense, Ben Flicker, of Topton, had two of the Wildcats’ seven hits, including a double, and scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning, while Cole Hofmann, of Newtown, had an RBI single. In the nightcap loss, New England pounded out 16 hits against four Penn College pitchers and it limited the Wildcats to four hits, including two by Deric Ellerman, of Landisburg, and a home run by Brittan Kittle, of Millville.
Softball
Facing Mt. Aloysius College in Myrtle Beach on Sunday in its season opener, Penn College won, 8-6. Later in the day, against Cedar Crest College, the Wildcats lost, 11-3, to drop to 1-1 overall. In the first game, Elizabeth Asher, of East Stroudsburg, singled in what turned out to be the game-winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Taylor Brooks, of Cogan Station, had a two-run double in the second inning for the Wildcats as she and Kassidy Svenson, of Auburn, handled all of the mound work with Svenson getting the win. In the second game, Penn College fell behind 6-0 after four innings and, despite rallying for three runs in the fifth, couldn’t come back. Asher and Alyssa Gentile, of Fairport, New York, had two hits each for the Wildcats, who committed four errors.
