“At the beginning (of the season), the guys were working hard but getting our tails kicked. Now, you’re starting to see guys be a lot more competitive,” first-year coach Jamie Miller assessed of his grapplers so far.
“At the Wilkes Open (Dec. 22), with a lot of Division I schools, we didn’t win a whole lot of matches, but you could tell that our guys are feeling more competitive, they’re feeling a lot more confident, they’re being more offensive and aggressive, and I think that’s a result of all the hard work they put in,” Miller said. “The wins (2-5 record) probably don’t indicate where we’re at right now, but the improvement of the guys has been awesome to watch.”
If everything falls into place, as Miller hopes it will this semester, the Wildcats expect to fill at least seven of 10 weight classes, and while the coach thinks that may translate into more team wins, he said there is a greater goal in mind.
“The closer we get to the end of the year, the more individual it becomes. … I would like to see us pull out another handful of dual-meet wins, but at the end of the day it all comes down to sending our best seven guys to (NCAA Division III) regionals on Feb. 24 and seeing if we can get one or two guys through to the national tournament,” Miller said.
“The first (semester) was getting guys prepared, getting them acclimated to a new system. … This semester, what it all boils down to, you want guys to be healthy at the right time, you want guys peaking at the right time,” Miller said.
