Mentorship Award Presented at Penn College Commencement

Pennsylvania College of Technology presented a Mentorship Award to alumnus Jeremy L. Thorne, owner and operator of ThorneCare Landscape Solutions LLC, in Sugarloaf.
The award was bestowed upon Thorne by Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour during the Fall 2017 commencement ceremony, held Dec. 16 at the Community Arts Center, Williamsport.
The Mentorship Award recognizes alumni, individuals or businesses who have made significant or ongoing contributions to the education and development of Penn College by providing mentorship opportunities or professional guidance.
Thorne graduated with honors in 2013. He earned Associate of Applied Science degrees in ornamental horticulture: landscape technology emphasis and ornamental horticulture: plant production emphasis.
He returns to Penn College regularly to speak to horticulture classes and has volunteered at college Open Houses and various recruiting events on campus.
As a student, Thorne served as a Presidential Student Ambassador, president of the Horticulture Club, and vice president for finance for the Student Government Association. He was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and received a number of awards, including Penn College Student of the Month, Student Leader of the Year and a Penn College Award. At graduation, he was honored with the Rose Staiman Memorial Award, presented for brotherhood, service to the college and community, and scholastic achievement.
Thorne served as a student ambassador at the Green Industry Conference two consecutive years and has since been invited back by the National Association of Landscape Professionals to help run the student ambassador program at the conference. He has volunteered for several years at the NALP's Renewal & Remembrance annual day of service at Arlington National Cemetery, helped NALP set up for a TV segment on “Fox & Friends” in New York City and was honored with NALP's first Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
As a student, he won awards at NALP competitions and was selected by the NALP Academic Excellence Foundation as The Landscape Partners and David Minor Scholarship recipient. He was a Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association Foundation Scholarship recipient and received the Silver Shovel award, honoring commitment, quality and service, from Maryland-based Dennison Landscaping & Nursery Inc.
Thorne is a Pennsylvania Certified Pesticide Applicator, an Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute Certified Paver Installer, a National Concrete Masonry Association Certified Segmental Wall Installer and a member of National Association of Landscape Professionals.
The Penn College graduate takes time off work each year to volunteer at the National Collegiate Landscape Competition. Among other volunteer outreach, he helped an Eagle Scout complete his Eagle project, and he volunteers at Christ Lutheran Church, Conyngham.
