Financial Aid Information Nights Scheduled

Monday, October 9, 2017

Free financial aid information nights will be available for two local schools in November.

The sessions are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in room A124 of Williamsport Area High School and Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at South Williamsport Area Junior/Senior High School. Students and parents from both schools may attend either event.

The primary goal of the sessions is to assist individuals and families in understanding the financial aid process so that funds can be made available to students pursuing higher education at any college or university.

“I am pleased that we are again able to join forces with these two high schools to help offer this opportunity to ensure students are maximizing financial aid resources,” said Dennis L. Correll, associate dean for enrollment management at Pennsylvania College of Technology. “The information presented will be pertinent, no matter where students plan to attend college.”

The all-encompassing sessions will help students and families understand the 2018-19 Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is required by colleges and universities to determine eligibility for federal and state grants, student and parent loans, and scholarships. The 2018-19 FAFSA, which will use income data from 2016, can be filed now, which is earlier than in past years.

“The financial aid process can be overwhelming and confusing, especially the first time,” said Kelsey Shannon, a school counselor in the South Williamsport Area School District. “The information sessions are an excellent opportunity for students to learn helpful information about the FAFSA application process, grants, loans and scholarships.”

“These programs are so helpful for parents and students to navigate this new world of college costs for the first time,” added Susan Hunsinger, a counselor in the Williamsport Area School District.

Registration is not required for the information sessions. Those with school-specific questions should contact Hunsinger or Shannon in their respective district counseling offices.
