The season ends this week for Pennsylvania College of Technology golfers as they compete Saturday and Sunday in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships. Also on the weekend, the archery team hosts the Eastern Regional Outdoor Collegiate Championships.
Last week, while taking advantage of a dry spell and paced by a women’s softball team that won all eight of its games, four spring sports teams posted a combined 14-4 record, including wins by the men’s and women’s tennis squads for the first time this year.
Golf
Competing in the nine-team Keuka College Invitational on Wednesday, Penn College placed sixth with a four-man score of 347. Michael Lautensack, of Berwin, topped the Wildcats with an 85, tied for 19th overall. SUNY Cobleskill took the team competition with a 315.
Penn College wraps up is regular season on Monday at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic in a final preparation for next Saturday and Sunday’s NEAC Championships, where the Wildcats look to improve on last year’s sixth-place finish.
“The season has been filled with rainouts and rescheduling, so it’s been tough to really get things going, but I’ve been very pleased with where we are at this point,” coach Matt Haile said. “We have some guys who really have come a long way; Tyler (Marks) has been playing great and I’m looking forward to see him continue with his success.”
Competing in the championships for Penn College will be Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown; Marks; Ben Fails, of Hummelstown; Austin Moscariello, of New Columbia; and either Mike Lautensack, of Berwyn, or Matt Ciccone, of North Wales.
“We have a practice round Friday and it will give them another chance to play the course. … It sets up well for us. It’s a short course (the 6,036-yard, par-70 Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley). We played decently (there, April 2), for our first time out. I expect a little better from them now that we have some more practice time under our belts,” the coach continued.
“It’s a matter of going out there and putting up two good rounds, back-to-back. … Managing the course well and playing their game, playing each hole one at a time, forgetting the big numbers and just giving it their all and never giving up,” Haile said.
“I think the squad that we have is going to be one of the better that we’ve had going into the championships. I’m looking forward to seeing it happen,” Haile added.
Archery
Penn College hosts the Eastern Regional Outdoor Collegiate Championships on Saturday and Sunday, featuring 17 colleges and universities and more than 120 archers.
Registration Saturday will be held between 10 a.m. and noon, with practice beginning at noon followed by recurve and compound ranking rounds, then mixed team rounds at 4 p.m. Practice on Sunday starts at 8 a.m., with recurve and compound elimination and medal rounds. The event wraps up at 1 p.m. Sunday with recurve and compound team rounds.
“I am hoping that the weather cooperates and we have a nice sunny, no-wind weekend for this tournament,” said Penn College coach Chad Karstetter, who is also serving as the tournament director.
“The Penn College archers are looking forward to having an event at our home field and have been hitting the practice range pretty hard these last few weeks.
“We have quite a few archers in pretty good standings to make the all-East team, which is the combination of their indoor nationals score and the score from this weekend.”
Baseball
Penn College topped Mount Aloysius on Monday in nonconference play, 11-2. Noah Esposito, of Williamsport, and Cole Hofmann, of Newtown, both had two-run triples and Cody Cline, of Waynesboro, went 4 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored while pitcher Cody Nelson, of South Williamsport, picked up his first win of the season.
Hosting Penn State Abington on Friday, Penn College split, winning 11-10 in nine innings and losing 10-7 in eight innings. In the first game, Richard Lennon, of Morgantown, drilled an RBI double in the bottom of the last frame to lift the Wildcats. Hofmann ended the game going 4 for 6 with three RBIs. In the second game, Penn College led 4-0 after one inning, during which Lennon hit a three-run homer, but Penn State Abington finished strong with a four-run eighth to win.
Wrapping up a 4-1 week on Saturday, and improving to 15-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference, the Wildcats took two at home from Cazenovia College by scores of 5-2 and 21-8. In the first game, Lowe went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Nelson improved to 2-0 on the mound with a five-strikeout performance. In the second contest, Brittan Kittle, of Millville, went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored while Lennon drove in five runs and Lowe drove in four runs.

The Wildcats continued to roll on Tuesday, hiking their win streak to six games with a 3-1 and 14-3 NEAC sweep of Wells College. Brooks shined on the mound in the first game, tossing a one-hitter and fanning nine. Coldsmith went 3 for 3 to pace the offense and Asher 2 for 3 as both hit triples. In the second game, Taylor Krow, of Mechanicsburg, went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Winter went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and she improved to 4-0 on the mound.
