Archers Off to Good Start; Baseball, Softball Teams Post Wins

Pennsylvania College of Technology archers got their season underway last week while its baseball and softball teams began weeklong play Sunday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Archery
The Wildcats opened their season Feb. 25-26 at the Pennsylvania Field and Target Archers Indoor State Championships in Taylor and coach Chad Karstetter liked what he saw.
“I was very pleased to see Markus Weber, of La Plata, Maryland; Tim Lamont, of Eldred; and Tyler Schoonover, of Bradford, all shoot 300s (perfect scores), and Aaron Cummings, of Mountville, and Logan Booth, of New Kensington, with 299s,” the coach, in his 15th season, said of his male compound team. “So far, for the beginning of the season, these guys are gonna push each other to achieve some pretty high scores.”
“In the men’s bowhunter, all four teammates shot really well. Andrew Rupp, of Dayton, had an equipment failure and that cost him one arrow. Other than that, he only dropped one point,” the coach continued after Rupp recorded a 294.
“Chelsea Douglass, of East Greenville, in female compound (293), and Erica Gause, of Bloomsburg, in female bowhunter (288), both shot extremely well and will help lead their teams throughout the rest of the season,” Karstetter noted, adding, “Kaylee Burk, of Hermitage, in female recurve, shot her personal best (a 276).”
“Overall, I am very happy with the way the whole team performed at our first event.
“Since this is the first time we ever shot a five-spot face (target), there were a lot of smiles coming off the line Saturday when the round was completed. The smiles were from the first-year archers finishing their first round ever. Others felt they shot better than they have all year (during practice),” Karstetter added.
Next up for the Wildcats is the indoor nationals at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, this weekend.
Baseball
On Sunday, Penn College evened its season record at 1-1 with a 14-2 win over Penn State Mont Alto. As of Monday morning, no statistics were available from the game.
Softball
In their season-opening softball games on Sunday, the Wildcats beat Cedar Crest College, 8-3, before losing to Eastern Mennonite University, 7-2. Against Cedar Crest, Penn College used a three-run fourth inning and three-run sixth to even its overall record at 1-1. Taylor Krow, of Mechanicsburg, and Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, each had three hits during the game, including doubles, to lead a 14-hit attack. Krow drove in two runs and Coldsmith scored three times. Taylor Brooks, of Cogan Station, went the seven-inning distance on the mound to pick up the win. No statistics were available as of Monday morning from the second game.
