Pennsylvania College of Technology is the recent recipient of a $25,000 gift from UGI Utilities Inc. that will benefit innovative programs that serve hundreds of high school students.
The donation will help to support the college’s Penn College NOW dual-enrollment program and its SMART Girls summer camp.
The nationally accredited Penn College NOW program enables academically qualified students at 42 participating high schools or career and technology centers to earn college credits through courses taught by Penn College-approved teachers.
The SMART in SMART Girls stands for Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies. The camp welcomes girls in grades nine to 11 to the Penn College campus, where they experience math and science as a foundation for careers in technology. During the 2016 camp, the girls explored entrepreneurship, innovation and digital fabrication as they designed a business plan, a 3-D printed product and related marketing materials.
“UGI recognizes the importance of education in preparing the students of today to be our community leaders of tomorrow,” said Keith Dorman, UGI director of communications and community relations. “UGI is especially pleased to provide support for this Penn College program that encourages young women to pursue careers in science and technology, a critical career path for our company and for our country.”
Penn College NOW and SMART Girls are recognized as “innovative educational programs” under the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Earned Income Tax Credit program, through which UGI Utilities made its gift.
“We are grateful for the continued support of UGI to our EITC-approved programs,” said Elizabeth A. Biddle, director of corporate relations at Penn College. “The continued partnership of UGI enables the college to provide these life-changing opportunities for high school students.”
UGI Utilities, a wholly owned subsidiary of UGI Corp., is a natural gas and electric utility committed to delivering reliable, safe and affordable energy to 700,000 customers in 45 counties in Pennsylvania and one county in Maryland.
