Students pursuing associate degrees in health information technology at Pennsylvania College of Technology recently held a seminar for other students in the major.
The focus of the seminar was job hunting and career advice. The students, all in their final semester, determined the topic and schedule and invited five speakers, four who are graduates of Penn College’s health information majors. Each offered practical guidance from the working-world perspective.
Speaking were Kathy Arner, a coding auditor for Geisinger Health System and a member of Penn College’s Health Information Technology Advisory Committee; Tiffany M. Farran, ’13, a health information manager for St. Luke Medical Center in Bethlehem; Lyndsey (Smith) Diehl, ’13, a trauma data quality specialist for the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation; Anna Reynolds, ’15, who works in billing for University Health Services at Penn State; and Brittany Adams, ’13, a risk adjustment coding educator for Geisinger Health Plan.
Penn College offers an associate degree in health information technology and a bachelor’s degree in health information management. Health information is the data related to a person’s medical history, including symptoms, diagnoses, procedures and outcomes. Health information records include patient histories, lab results, X-rays, clinical information and notes.
Graduates of Penn College’s associate degree are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician exam, while those who earn the bachelor’s degree can sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator exam.
