Cross-Country Teams Headed for NEAC Championships

Sunday, October 23, 2016

With their regular season behind them, Pennsylvania College of Technology cross-country runners are preparing for the end-of-the-season North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships. Men’s and women’s action is scheduled Saturday at Lancaster Bible College.

“It’s been a pretty fair season,” second-year coach Nick Patton said of his men’s squad. “We’ve got a lot of new people, so we’re still figuring out the 8K (race distance), but overall I’m pretty impressed with the progress we’ve made from the beginning to the end. The team as a whole has made progress.”

Looking at the championship meet, Patton said: “We just need to stay focused. There’s a lot at stake for them; we were polled 12th in the preseason and that’s not where we think we will finish, for sure. They’re ready to go. They’ve put in all of the work. … As long as we stay focused we should head into the championships with the right frame of mind.”

Freshman Josh Velez, of Lewistown, is the team’s top individual runner and Patton expects good things from him.

“Definitely, he’ll be in the top 21, which is all-conference; it just depends where he will be in the top 21. I think he is shooting for a Top 5 finish and I think that is achievable,” the coach said.

Earlier this season Velez posted a time of 29:39 while finishing fifth at the Penn State Abington Invitational and was rewarded afterward by being named the NEAC Runner of the Week.

Assessing the 8 and 6K courses that the men and women, respectively, will run on, Patton said, “actually, it’s a pretty fair cross-country course. It’s not flat, but it’s not hilly. It has rolling hills. The footing is not as good as it should be. We’ve already been there twice this year. I think it caters to us, I think we’re stronger on rolling courses like that. I think it works to our benefit.”

On the women’s side, Patton said, “I’m just looking forward to going to the championships and having fun. I think overall the women’s team has done very well, they met all of the expectations that I thought they would. As a whole, the team has come together and made progress. We just need to go as a team and see what we can do.”
