Open House Provides Alluring Reasons to Explore Penn College

Where can you test your skill with a virtual welding machine, tour a “haunted” physics laboratory, see a working sawmill in action, design a 3-D model home, surrender to the smell and taste of student-baked bread, and experience the unpredictable world of a paramedic?
All of those eye-opening opportunities – and scores of others – will be available to visitors at Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Fall Open House on Sunday, Oct. 30.
“Open House at Penn College is really a one-of-a-kind experience. There is quite literally no area of campus unavailable for students and families to explore,” said Ashley R. Murphy, director of admissions. “The students are in charge of their day. They get to pick and choose what they want to do from more than 100 activities.”
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., prospective students and their families can learn more about 100-plus bachelor’s, associate and certificate programs when they visit the main campus in Williamsport and the nearby Aviation and Earth Science centers. Free shuttle service is available on campus, and buses will transport guests to and from the other locations throughout the day.
“This is a particularly exciting time to visit,” Murphy added. “We’re introducing new majors, demonstrating new equipment in our labs – all while celebrating the rich traditions that make Penn College such a special place.”
Coming for Fall 2017 is an associate degree in brewing and fermentation science, which will provide graduates with a blend of skills and abilities related to the science, technology, art and business of brewing and fermentation operations.
New this fall is a two-year degree in physical therapist assistant, the latest addition to the always-in-demand careers represented by the college’s School of Health Sciences. Graduates can find meaningful work in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation hospitals and outpatient orthopedic settings.
Among other new offerings is a bachelor’s degree in business administration: sport and event management concentration, designed to help prepare those seeking management positions in those industries. The major – which can lead to exciting opportunities in athletic or convention venues – dovetails nicely with the college’s entrée into NCAA competition, as Wildcat student-athletes may wish to continue working in sports after graduation.
Penn College fields 15 intercollegiate teams in 10 sports, and coaches will be on hand during Open House to talk with interested guests.
Also on the menu are a variety of information sessions – including “It’s a Major Decision” – that will help guests refine a career path among the college’s six distinct (and distinctive) academic schools. Dining facilities and The College Store will be open for visitors’ convenience.
Faculty, deans, students and alumni – and members of the Admissions, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Dining Services, Athletics and Student Activities staff – will answer questions and guide Open House guests.
At Penn College, a special mission affiliate of Penn State, students learn in hands-on fashion from faculty with real-world experience, using industry-standard equipment and technologies.
Students spend three hours in labs for every one hour in lectures, and the average class size is 17. Nine out of 10 students receive financial aid, two-year majors can readily transition to bachelor’s-degree programs and the college’s graduate placement rate is 96 percent.
