College's 'Phenomenal' Support of Salvation Army Challenge Lauded
Tuesday, October 4, 2016
The "phenomenal turnout of Penn College support" at Saturday's Salvation Army 10K & 20K Trail Race – both from faculty/staff participants and student assistants – was noted by Michael J. Reed, an event organizer and dean of sciences, humanities and visual communications. Winning their age groups in the 10K event were Emily B. Miller, instructor of exercise science, and Garret L. Graff, associate professor of building construction technology. Also finishing strong in their respective 10K categories were David E. Bjorkman, instructor of emergency management/social science; Christine B. Kavanagh, nursing programs instructor; Hillary E. Hoftsrom, director of employee relations and compliance; and Kimberly R. Cassel, director of alumni relations. Among the top age-group finishers in the 20K race were Brad L. Nason, associate professor of mass communications; and John D. Maize, instructor of speech communication/composition. Ten human services students in the college’s Community and Organizational Change course are committed this fall to the Community Challenge, which includes last weekend's race as well as a 5K run/walk at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at Williamsport Area High School. In addition, about 20 volunteers from the college's Student Athlete Advisory Committee assisted with parking, registration, staffing the water station and on the cleanup crew.
