Penn College Women Stay Unbeaten in NEAC

Sparked by the offensive play of junior Hailee Hartman, who had five goals, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s soccer team put together a 2-1 week and stayed unbeaten in North Eastern Athletic Conference action.



At Alfred University in nonconference play on Wednesday, Alfred made a goal scored at 13:23 stand up for a 1-0 Penn College loss. Alfred led in shots on goal, 17-7 (10-1 on goal), and in corner kicks, 5-2.

Playing at Wilson College in NEAC action on Saturday, Penn College rebounded with a 5-0 win and snapped a two-match loss streak. Hartman, of Lampeter, led the Wildcats’ offense with two goals as Penn College dominated in shots, 28-1 (22-0 on goal), and in corner kicks, 13-0.

Wrapping up its week on Sunday, Penn College got three goals and an assist from Hartman and a goal and an assist from Jane Herman, of Greencastle, in a 6-1 NEAC win at Gallaudet University that upped the team’s overall record to 5-3-1 and kept it unbeaten in the conference at 4-0. Penn College led in shots, 20-2 (13-2 on goal), and in corner kicks, 9-0.

In conference action this week: host Cazenovia College (3-6 overall, 1-4 NEAC through Sunday), 1 p.m. Saturday; host Morrisville State (2-5-1, 1-4), noon Sunday.

Last meeting vs. Cazenovia College: Last Oct. 4, Penn College won, 5-1, as Robyn Beddow scored three goals and assisted on another while Hartman had two assists.

Last meeting vs. Morrisville State: Last Sept. 11, Penn College won, 1-0, on a goal by Beddow at 69:58.

Statistically speaking through Sunday: Penn College has scored 21 goals overall on 122 shot tries and its opponents 10 on 86 attempts.

Men's Soccer
Goals by Ian Scheller, of Sunbury, at 50:24 and Dan Hibbs, of Loyalsock Township, on a penalty kick at 66:28, lifted Penn College to a 2-1 non-conference win Tuesday at Summit University.

Returning to conference play on Saturday at Wilson College, Penn College dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime. Gerry Lua, of Biglerville, put the Wildcats on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 65:21 mark. Wilson tied it at 72:31 and then won with the last goal at 91:25. Wilson led in shots, 11-6 (7-3 on goal) and in corner kicks, 13-1.

On Sunday at Gallaudet University, the Wildcats lost 2-0 to drop to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the NEAC as the home team made two early goals stand up. Gallaudet led in shots, 15-13 (8-3 on goal), and corner kicks, 7-1.

In conference action this week: host Cazenovia College (1-6 overall, 0-5 NEAC through Sunday), 3 p.m. Saturday; host Morrisville State (6-1, 5-0), 2 p.m. Sunday.

Last meeting vs. Cazenovia College: Last Oct. 4, Penn College lost, 4-0, as it was outshot 28-7 (10-4 on goal).

Last meeting vs. Morrisville State: Last Sept. 11, Penn College lost, 5-0, being outshot 34-4 (17-2 on goal).

Women's Volleyball
Stepping into NEAC action for the first time this season at the Keuka College quad, Penn College lost to Keuka on Friday, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-21), and Wells College early Saturday, 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-22), before beating Cazenovia College, 3-0, to go to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Against Keuka, Lauren Slater, of Littlestown, had seven assists and Jillian Persing, also of Littlestown, had seven digs. Against Wells, Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, had 16 digs. Individual statistics were not available from the Cazenovia match as of Sunday.

In conference action this week: at Penn State Berks quadrangular vs. SUNY Poly (9-6 overall, 5-1 NEAC through Sunday), 2 p.m. Saturday; vs. Morrisville State (12-5, 6-1), 4 p.m. Saturday; vs. SUNY Cobleskill (6-9, 1-6), 11 a.m. Sunday.

Last meeting vs. SUNY Poly: Last Sept. 26, Penn College lost, 3-0. Sophie Coldsmith led the Wildcats with 16 assists.

Last meeting vs. Morrisville State: Last Sept. 26, Penn College lost, 3-0. Coldsmith had nine assists and Kaitlyn Young eight digs.

Last meeting vs. SUNY Cobleskill: Last Sept. 27, Penn College lost, 3-0. Coldsmith had 18 assists.

Cross-Country
On Tuesday, it was announced that Wildcat freshman Josh Velez, of Lewistown, was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference Runner of the Week after he finished fifth among 79 runners Sept. 17 with a time of 29:39 at the 8K Penn State Abington Invitational.

On Thursday at the Lancaster Bible Invitational, the men’s team ended 10th in an 11-team field and the women last among 10 teams. Velez led the men’s squad with a time of 35:45 in an 8K race, good for 54th place, and Thomas Runner, of Elkridge, Maryland, was right behind in 55th. Kylee Kalnas, of Easton, topped the Penn College women in a 6K race in 38:26.

Back in action Saturday at the Lock Haven Open, the Penn College men placed 13th in a 15-team field and the women last among 18 teams. Velez led the men with a time of 27:30 over an 8K course and was 48th among individuals while Runner turned in a 28:31 and was 93rd. For the Penn College women, Annika Miller, of Lancaster, was 187th over a 6K course with a time of 29:34.

Golf
On Tuesday at the Elizabethtown College Invitational, played on the Hershey Country Club East course, the Wildcats ended 13th in a 19-team field with a 326 score. Messiah won the team competition with a 292. For Penn College, Evan Johnson, of Towanda, shot an 80; Justin Geedey, of Turbotville, an 81; Austin Moscariello, of New Columbia, an 82; and Zachary Yost, of Johnstown, an 83.

Men's Tennis
On Sunday at home with King’s College, Penn College lost, 9-0, to drop to 0-4.

Women's Tennis
On Thursday at home with Lebanon Valley College, Penn College lost, 7-0.

At home Sunday with King’s College, the Wildcats fell, 5-2, to go to 0-6. At No. 1 singles Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, won, 7-2, 7-6. Penn College’s other win came via a forfeit at No. 5 singles.

Women’s Basketball
Penn College will hold its first prospect day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 in Bardo Gymnasium.
