Physics Faculty Present Talks at Conference

Two Pennsylvania College of Technology physics faculty members presented talks at the American Association of Physics Teachers – Central Pennsylvania Section conference, held recently at Moravian College, Bethlehem.



Joseph E. LeBlancJoseph E. LeBlanc, assistant professor of physics, presented “Project-Based Exams, a Variation on the Take Home Test.” He shared his successes in switching to a project-based exam to enhance students’ understanding of the usefulness and application of physics in their technologies and daily lives.

LeBlanc holds a doctorate in aerospace engineering from Nagoya University in Japan; a Master of Science in physics from California State University, Northridge; and a Bachelor of Science in physics from University of Puerto Rico. He received Penn College’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004 and is a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

David S. RichardsDavid S. Richards, professor of physics, presented “Understanding Student Perceptions of Faraday’s Law of Induction.” His talk focused on a study he completed to assess and improve students’ understanding of electromagnetic induction.

Richards holds a doctorate in instructional systems from Penn State, a Master of Science in physics from the University of Alabama and a Bachelor of Science in physics from Mary Washington College. He received Penn College’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007 and an Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology Award in 2005, presented at the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning.
