A new home course to practice and play on and so many players out for the team that eliminations were required have Pennsylvania College of Technology golf coach Matt Haile smiling.
Wildcat golfers become the last Penn College fall sports team to begin its season when they take to the links on Wednesday at Keuka College.
Entering their eighth season under Haile, the Wildcats return five players from last year’s team that placed sixth in the spring North Eastern Athletic Conference championships. They are Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown; Tyler Marks, of Beachwood, New Jersey; Evan Johnson, of Towanda; Justin Geedey, of Selinsgrove; and Ryen Persun, of Linden.
“I had 14 guys who were trying out for 12 spots on the team. … I’m very pleased with the talent that we have with the guys who are returning. This is one of the largest returning classes and I’m excited about that,” Haile said.
“I’m excited about the talent they are showing and the improvements they have made over the summer, and also I am excited about the recruits we have coming in — Zachary Yost, of Johnstown, and Austin Moscariello, of New Columbia — they’ve been playing quite well in practice … and also the older brother of Justin Geedey, Derrick, transferred here from Penn State,” the coach said.
This fall, for the first time, the Wildcats will call Williamsport Country Club their home course after many years at White Deer.
“It’s been a great transition. It’s going to prepare them better for the courses that we play,” Haile said. “Many thanks to the country club and their board welcoming us with open arms. It’s been great working with them and Chris McDonald, the pro.”
In addition to practicing at WCC, the Wildcats will host Lycoming College in a match there on Oct. 3.
Although the spring NEAC season is months away, a recent poll of the conference’s coaches has Penn College finishing seventh among nine teams, but Haile thinks it will do better.
“I think it’s a little low,” Haile said of the position. “This is one of our stronger teams in the last couple of years. They are managing their games better, managing their scores, the course is better, they are playing smarter golf. … I definitely expect our guys to play better than where the poll has us.”
In the coaches’ voting, Rutgers University-Camden was first with 64 points; followed by SUNY Cobleskill, 51; Penn State Abington, 41; Penn State Berks, 38; Keuka College, 32; Penn College, 29; Bryn Athyn College, 16; and Wilson College, 10.
