Pennsylvania College of Technology students have received two of the five $5,000 national scholarships awarded this year by the Oil and Energy Service Professionals and its co-sponsors.
Penn College winners are Michael J. Boylston, of Carmel, New York – his third consecutive OESP scholarship – and Thomas E. “Ted” Daros Jr., of North Salem, New York. Boylston is enrolled in building automation technology and Daros, who was also a 2015 recipient, is a heating, ventilation and air conditioning design technology major.
“It is exciting to see students that have such a passion for the industry,” said Marc E. Bridgens, dean of construction and design technologies. “The support that the Oil and Energy Service Professionals organization provides through these scholarships is a tremendous benefit for these outstanding students. I am sure that the education they receive through the use of these scholarships will be acknowledged for years to come in their HVAC careers.”
Applicants were required to write 500-word essays about their background and how it prepared them for success in their chosen field and where they see themselves in the next five to 10 years. Letters of recommendation from an HVAC or plumbing instructor also were part of the criteria.
“A big congratulations to Ted and Michael for successfully competing for these 2016 OESP scholarships,” said Richard C. Taylor, associate professor of plumbing and heating, who attended the recent awards banquet at the Foxwoods resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut. “We are proud of how successful our HVAC students are in their pursuit of national scholarships.”
Boylston has worked for the past two summers as an intern at the Trane Co. in New York City, where he has been offered full-time employment upon graduation. Daros’ father and uncle own Heritage Fuel and Propane in Croton Falls, New York.
The awards come from the organization’s Dave Nelsen Scholarship Program, which has distributed nearly $300,000 in student aid since the fund was established in 1999. Proceeds from an annual golf tournament are combined with matching contributions from partners in the energy service industry. Boylston’s award was co-sponsored by Honeywell; Daros’ scholarship included support from OESP’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter.
Originally known as the National Association of Oilheating Service Managers, OESP comprises about 800 professionals who serve the energy needs of the northeast portion of the United States.
