A free spaghetti dinner was held this past week in the Keystone Dining Room to call attention to food insecurity – the struggle to afford sufficient food for good nutrition – and to support an imminent on-campus resource to ease the problem. A recent Dining Services survey indicated that, if a food pantry was available on campus, 69.5 percent of student respondents would use it as a means to supplement their grocery purchases. More than half of the students questioned (59 percent) also said they have gone without food or skipped a meal because they lacked the money or resources to eat. Those attending Thursday's dinner were asked to contribute a nonperishable food item toward The Cupboard at Penn College; slated to open for the Fall 2016 semester, the facility will be a food pantry specifically targeted to assist Penn College students that are struggling with food insecurities. The event was sponsored by Dining Services and the Off-Campus Housing Organization.
