Penn College Sports Teams Have Busy Week

Sunday, April 24, 2016

After a couple of weeks when the weather created some schedule interruptions, Pennsylvania College of Technology spring sports teams found themselves quite busy last week with 20 games.

Golf
After Saturday’s first round of the two-day North Eastern Athletic Conference golf championships at Cobleskill, New York, Penn College was tied with Keuka College at 342 for fifth place among eight teams, 32 strokes off the pace of leading Camden-Rutgers. Individually for the Wildcats, Calvin Foust, of Palmyra, shot an 81 and was tied for 12th; Tyler Marks, of Forked River, New Jersey, shot an 85 and was tied for 15th; Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, shot an 87 and was tied for 22nd; Justin Greedey, of Turbotville, shot an 89 and was tied for 27th; and Ryen Persun, of Linden, shot a 94 and was 36th among 41.

Baseball
Hosting Penn State Abington on April 17 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play, Penn College lost by scores of 8-4 and 6-4. In the first game, Dylan Scaringi, of Coatesville, and Richard Lennon, of Morgantown, each had two hits, including doubles, and Lennon drove in a pair of runs. In the second game, Cole Weachock, of Pottsville, had two hits, including a double and triple, drove in a run and scored twice.

At home against nonconference foe Juniata College on Tuesday, the Wildcats were edged 7-6. Trailing 6-1 after 2 1/2-innings, Penn College fought back to knot the score before Juniata struck again in the top of the ninth and won. Rylan Whitmyer, of Williamsport, led the Penn College offense with three hits, including a double, two runs scored and one RBI.

Back in NEAC action at Lancaster Bible College on Friday, Penn College lost 13-10 and won 9-2. In the first game, the Wildcats led 7-1 after 5 1/2-innings before being outscored 12-3 the rest of the way. Whitmyer and Cole Hoffman, of Newtown, supplied most of the offense — Hoffman with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Whitmyer with a grand-slam homer in the sixth. Lennon also homered in that game. In the second contest, Penn College trailed 2-0 before erupting for eight runs in the fifth inning as Hoffman had a three-run double and Weachock a three-run home run. Pitcher Brad Walter, of Williamsport, went the distance for the mound win, striking out 10.

Playing at Gallaudet University on Saturday, Penn College split — winning 11-6 and losing 3-2 — to go to 12-20 overall and 3-7 in the conference. In the win, Hoffman continued his offensive outburst by going 4 for 6 at the plate including a double and four RBIs. In the second game, the Wildcats were limited to four hits and left eight runners on base.

In the conference standings through Saturday, Penn State Abington was 7-2, Penn State Berks 7-3, Lancaster Bible 8-4, SUNY Poly 5-3, Gallaudet University 4-6, Keuka College 3-5, Penn College 3-7 and Cazenovia College 0-7.

Softball
Squaring off against SUNY Poly on April 17 at home, the Wildcats dropped their first game in NEAC play, 9-5, before rebounding to win the nightcap. 3-0. In the first game, Taylor Brooks, of Cogan Station, and Kelsey Gantz, of South Williamsport, each had three hits. Gantz drove in three runs, but starting pitcher Amanda Kustanbauter, of Muncy, got roughed up early as SUNY Poly scored all of its runs in the top of the first inning. In the second game, Brooks took to the mound and went the seven-inning distance, twirling a two-hitter and fanning eight. Gantz added two more hits, drove in a run and scored another, and Elizabeth Asher, of East Stroudsburg, had a two-run double to pace the Penn College offense.

Playing at Alfred University on Tuesday in nonconference action, Penn College lost by scores of 12-2 and 8-0.  Gantz had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run in the opener as Alfred pounded out 12 hits against two Wildcats pitchers. In the second game, the Wildcats were limited to three hits.

Returning to NEAC play on Wednesday against Keuka College, Penn College lost, 3-0, and won, 7-4. In the first game, Gantz and Taylor Krow, of Mechanicsburg, each had two hits but the Wildcats couldn’t push across any runs as they left seven runners on base. In the second game, Gantz added two more hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs while Krow scored three times.

On Friday in NEAC action at Cazenovia College, the Wildcats dropped a couple heartbreakers, both by 4-3 scores. In the first game, Krow drilled a three-run double in the fourth inning, but the home team scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings to pull out the win despite being out-hit, 11-4. In the second game, Cazenovia scored all of its runs in the first inning and held on. Brooks took the mound loss, fanning 10 but walking eight.

Back in action on Saturday again at Cazenovia, Penn College dropped two more, by scores of 16-3 and 12-4, to go to 12-15 overall and 6-6 in the NEAC. In the first game, Brooks hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning after Cazenovia scored 10 runs in the top of the frame. In the nightcap, Brooks duplicated her first-game effort, drilling a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, to key the Penn College offense, but the home team scored nine in the second inning to pull away.

Also during the week it was announced that Brooks was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for her performance during the period of March 10-16 for the No. 8 (USCAA) nationally ranked Wildcats. Brooks went 3-0 with two shutouts. Overall, she posted a 1.17 ERA with 33 strikeouts while allowing just 10 hits. Brooks had double-digit strikeout performances against Morrisville State (10) and SUNY Cobleskill (11).

Through Saturday in the NEAC North Division, Keuka College was 10-2; SUNY Poly, 5-3; Cazenovia College, 8-4; Penn College, 6-6; Morrisville State, 3-11; and SUNY Cobleskill, 2-8. Penn State Berks led the South Division at 16-0.

Men’s, Women Tennis
In their lone matches of the week, both the men and women lost at Keuka College in action that started on Friday and continued into Saturday because of bad weather — the men losing 8-1 and the women 5-4. And later on Saturday the women lost at Wells College, 7-2. The big winner for the Wildcats was freshman Carolyn Krasley, of Ephrata, who won at No. 2 singles in both of her matches and teamed with Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, for a win at No. 1 doubles against Keuka. The women’s team ended its regular season 2-10 overall and 2-4 in the NEAC while the men’s team was 1-10 overall and 0-4 in the NEAC.

“I am a bit disappointed,” said fifth-year coach Robert Kemrer. “Both teams had some pretty close matches; unfortunately, we could not come out on top in those matches. I think that we had a tough season overall, but we have a lot of younger players who have made big improvements.”
