Penn College Summer Camps Provide Interactive, Hands-On Fun

Pennsylvania College of Technology offers a series of summer camps, many of them new this year, that reflect the unique career opportunities offered in its six academic schools.

The registration deadline is June 3 (unless noted otherwise); 10 of the offerings are overnight, and three are day camps. Students entering grades nine to 12 at the time of participation are eligible for an annual Summer Camp Scholarship to attend Penn College.

Architecture Odyssey Camp (New for 2016)
June 20-23 for students entering grades nine to 12
Journey with faculty into the wonderful world of architecture and sustainable design. Experience the richness of the architectural past, present and future. Campers are encouraged to bring their curiosity and creativity as they learn about the built environment and develop an appreciation for (and the skills necessary to produce) a sustainable future. Activities include design studio, workshops, seminars, field trips to building sites and visits with local architects.

Autism Spectrum Postsecondary Interest Experience
June 23-24 for students entering grades nine to 11; signup deadline is May 12
It is essential to ask the right questions while exploring postsecondary programs/fields. The ASPIE program is the perfect opportunity for high school students in grades 9-11 with autism spectrum disorders, and their parents, to obtain valuable information pertaining to postsecondary education and career exploration.

Designing a Digital Future Camp
June 20-21 for students entering grades 10-12
Explore a variety of information technology fields including gaming, programming, networking, cybersecurity and mobile applications at this fun and interactive two-day camp. Campers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in labs and classrooms and participate in gaming, simulation and cybersecurity activities. Hands-on workshops will guide campers to develop their own game, program robots and develop mobile apps.

Future Restaurateurs Career Camp
June 21-22 for students entering grades nine to 12
Love to cook or bake? Dream of owning your own restaurant or becoming a famous chef? Join chefs from Penn College’s School of Business & Hospitality for a camp focused on the ins and outs of baking and pastry arts, culinary arts and hospitality management. Campers will experience hands-on activities centered on developing kitchen skills, culinary/baking skills, menu planning, an etiquette workshop and more!

Advanced Restaurateurs Career Camp (New for 2016)
June 22-24 for students entering grades nine to 12
Campers will build upon the skills learned at Future Restaurateurs Career Camp to work in advanced classes focused on bread, butchery, culinary, baking and food production. Campers will use their skills to prepare dinner on the last evening. Parents are invited to join them for dinner and taste the delicious food they created. (Limit two guests per camper.)

Graphic Design Summer Studio (New for 2016)
June 22-24 for students entering grades 10-12
An intensive three-day workshop that guides participants through the graphic design process from ideation and concept development to production. High school students interested in a career in graphic design will have an opportunity to work with faculty and students in the development of real-world visual design solutions. Workshops will take place in cutting-edge labs and studios, and will utilize industry-standard hardware and software. The workshop culminates in a camper exhibition for parents and families of the work produced over the three days.

Health Careers Camp
June 22-23 for students entering grades nine to 12
Love helping people? Ever thought about a career in the health care industry? If “Yes” is the answer, attend this exciting camp presented by Penn College and Susquehanna Health. Campers will be introduced to a variety of health careers including dental hygiene, medical imaging, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, paramedic technology, physical therapy assistant, exercise science, physician assistant and surgical technology. They will also participate in hands-on activities and tour the region’s state-of-the-art hospital.

Inventors Institute Camp (New for 2016)
June 20-21 for students entering grades nine to 12
Love to design, invent, imagine and create? It’s time to turn those ideas in your head into physical designs and models. Be led on an adventure to the world of designing wonderful things. Activities include making models in plastic, clay, wood and foam; rocket building and testing; body-part casting to learn about ergonomics; charcoal drawings; and much more! Campers will work with power tools and messy materials while building their inventions. Each camper will receive safety goggles and a lab coat.

SMART Girls Summer Camp
June 20-24 for students entering grades nine to 11
Penn College developed Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART) Girls to counter an alarming academic and social trend: Girls tend to shy away from math and sciences as they enter adolescence and their important high school years. This summer, SMART Girls is ready to help young women turn their dreams into reality! Campers will D.R.E.A.M about digital fabrication and learn about the sciences behind Designing, Rapid prototyping, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing. Campers will work in the Carnegie Science Center Mobile Fab Lab, and teams will design a business plan and replicate a product they believe can be successful in today’s economy. Campers will also have the opportunity to visit Penn College labs that provide students with the education to enter careers associated with digital fabrication. Teams will present their plans and products at the end of the week to a panel of judges to see who created the most innovative ideas. Campers need no prior knowledge of 3-D printing or design – just a willingness to work together, learn new technology and have a great time!

Sport & Event Marketing Career Camp (New for 2016)
June 28-29 for students entering grades nine to 12
Explore the exciting world of digital marketing in the sport and event management industry. Faculty will introduce marketing concepts in the digital world and how they relate to customer relations, digital media, marketing tools, sales, event planning and sport management. Campers will learn about a variety of management and marketing positions relating to sport- and event-based industries, such as major and minor sports leagues, retail, equipment, tickets, conventions, conferences, event entities, sport agencies, health clubs, and much more.

Day camps are:

Creative Art Camp
June 27-30 for students entering grades four to six
This camp provides youngsters the chance to explore art and creativity through a variety of media. Campers work with professional artists and educators to produce unique works of art, focus on the creative process, and develop their imagination and creativity. Each day, young artists will focus on a different medium, including printmaking, textiles, Zen doodles, drawings and more! All art supplies are included.

Making the Grade in College and Life (New for 2016)
June 27-29 for students graduating from high school in 2014-17
This camp is designed to help college-bound students prepare for life after high school. Through interactive workshops and activities, students will explore skills such as time management and organization, personal responsibility, critical thinking, effective study strategies, and communication and networking, and how those skills apply to various college and career opportunities. Workshops will give campers tools and valuable resources to help navigate the transition from high school student to adulthood.

Youth Training for Athletic Development Camp
June 20-July 14; two sessions for 12- to 14-year-olds and 15- to 17-year-olds
This four-week camp prepares young athletes for safe and effective participation in their chosen sport. Learning proper technique in strength and conditioning, along with sport-specific skill training, will improve a young athlete’s strength, coordination, agility, balance, power and speed. A weekly nutrition workshop will review healthy eating practices and sample snacks. At the end of the four weeks, campers will receive progress reports and a take-home program for strength, flexibility and cardio for future development. The program format is specific to youth training based on National Strength and Conditioning Association guidelines and is taught by Penn College exercise science faculty.
