Pennsylvania College of Technology took home two Silver CUPPIE Awards recently in a competition sponsored by the College and University Public Relations and Associated Professionals.
Presented for creative excellence in marketing and communications, CUPPIES are awarded annually by CUPRAP, the mid-Atlantic’s oldest regional organization for professionals in higher education communications.
A Silver CUPPIE was awarded to Penn College in the Writing – Feature Article category for “Clean Water to Go,” which appeared in the Fall 2015 issue of the college’s One College Avenue magazine.
The piece, written by Thomas F. Speicher, writer/video editor, focuses on the efforts of plastics and polymer engineering technology alumnus Jason C. Gross to redesign the Wello WaterWheel, a device facilitating access to clean water in India. Gross shifted the WaterWheel from a rotational-molded product to a blow-molded design to increase production output and reduce costs.
The college captured another Silver CUPPIE in the Produced In-House (TV) category for a commercial (“Penn College and Little League – A Winning Team”) that aired during the 2015 Little League World Series.
Written, produced and edited by Speicher, the commercial highlights Penn College’s longtime commitment to Little League Baseball while emphasizing the hands-on nature of a Penn College education.
The spot mixes vintage and contemporary photos of Penn College students working at Little League with video of today’s students applying real-world, technical skills.
Speicher previously captured Gold CUPPIES – in the 2014 and 2015 competitions – for feature articles written for the college magazine.
“We are honored to have been recognized once again in the CUPPIE Awards competition, and we are proud of Tom’s contributions to our media-relations and marketing efforts,” said Joseph S. Yoder, associate vice president for public relations and marketing. “Penn College has been well-represented at the CUPPIES in recent years. It’s always gratifying to receive this level of acknowledgment from our peers.”
The awards were presented on March 10 at CUPRAP’s annual Spring Conference in Hershey.
