Pennsylvania College of Technology junior Jordan A. Courter and senior LaQuinn N. Thompson were recognized as the institution’s top scholar-athletes at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania Winning Combination event held Thursday at Lycoming College.
The event, part of the FCFP’s monthly "centennial surprises" for 2016, recognized the most outstanding student-athletes at each Lycoming County high school, as well as Lycoming College and Penn College.
Students selected are top scholar-athletes with strong leadership skills and are considered role-model representatives by their respective schools.
Courter and Thompson joined the other outstanding athletes at a private dinner with former Pittsburgh Steelers standout Hines Ward prior to Ward’s keynote address. A former scholastic and collegiate scholar-athlete in both football and baseball, Ward spoke about overcoming adversity – specifically about his experience as an underprivileged child being raised in a single-parent home.
Courter, of Mill Hall, is a three-year member of the women’s soccer team and was a team captain as a junior. A Dean’s List occupational therapy assistant major, she is a two-time All-North Eastern Athletic Conference selection, a United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic member and a NEAC Scholar Athlete. Courter is a member of the Occupational Therapy Club and volunteers for several community service events sponsored by the Athletics Department.
Thompson, of York, is a four-year member of the men’s basketball team at Penn College and is an involved member of the campus and Williamsport communities. The senior applied human services major is a Resident Assistant, president of Students Making a Contribution and volunteers at Firetree Place in Williamsport and for community service initiatives held by the Athletics Department.
