Math Professors Receive Outstanding Assessment Award

Two Pennsylvania College of Technology mathematics faculty members have been named recipients of the college’s 2015 President’s Award for Outstanding Assessment of Student Learning.

Joanna K. Flynn, assistant professor of mathematics, and Ed G. Owens, associate professor and department head of mathematics, received the honor on Jan. 8 at the all-college meeting opening the Spring 2016 semester.

The President’s Award for Outstanding Assessment of Student Learning recognizes initiative and creativity in facilitating student learning and reflects the college’s commitment to ongoing assessment of student learning outcomes.



Ed G. OwensJoanna K. FlynnFlynn and Owens conducted various assessments to determine how to improve students’ success in mathematics placement exams and gateway math courses. Their most recent assessment provided direct insight into effective strategies students can utilize to improve their testing performance. The recommendations are being implemented through the college’s student advising process.

Flynn has taught math at secondary and postsecondary institutions. She began working at Penn College in 2003. She formerly served as mathematics department head, director of mathematics and general education, and assistant dean for the School of Integrated Studies (now the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications).

Flynn earned a Master of Science in operations research and applied statistics and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and economics from the University of Miami.

Owens has taught math at the secondary and postsecondary levels. He began his employment at Penn College in 1988. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the college in 1995. He served as an assistant dean for the School of Integrated Studies (later the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications) for 10 years.

Owens holds a master’s degree in mathematics education and school administrative certifications from Penn State and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Lock Haven University.
