Kelly B. Butzler, associate professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania College of Technology, presented at the 12th annual Teaching Professor Conference, held recently in Atlanta.
Her presentation topic was “Take Note! The Synergistic Effects of Metacognition and the Flipped Classroom.” Butzler is an avid educational advocate for “flipped classrooms” – a blended learning approach to standard classrooms.
Flipped classrooms move lectures online – outside of class – and move assignments into the classroom, where teachers can provide guidance and answer questions. Butzler introduced self-regulated learning tools into her flipped classrooms to help students learn to reflect on their thinking processes.
A resident of Jersey Shore and a native of Red Lion, Butzler has taught at Penn College for 16 years. She holds a Doctorate of Education, specializing in e-learning, from Northcentral University; a master’s degree in organic chemistry; a bachelor’s degree in science education from North Carolina State University; and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Gettysburg College.
