College Receives Funding Aimed at School Readiness for Children

Thursday, July 9, 2015

Pennsylvania College of Technology has received a $10,766 grant to align its early childhood education curriculum with recently revised Pennsylvania Core Knowledge Competencies for early childhood and school-age professionals.

The college has entered a one-year contract with Berks County Intermediate Unit, the fiscal agent for the Pennsylvania Key, which provides statewide leadership in coordinating early childhood education, quality improvements to programs and professional-development support. The Pennsylvania Key operates in conjunction with the Office of Child Development and Early Learning, which is jointly overseen by the state Department of Human Services and the state Department of Education.

The Berks County Intermediate Unit awarded the college the monies through a Race to the Top grant.

“The priority of this grant is to promote school readiness for children with high needs,” said Thomas C. Heffner, the grant’s project director and assistant dean: programs in the School of Sciences, Humanities and Visual Communications at Penn College. “Aligning our early childhood education coursework with the revised state Core Knowledge Competencies ensures our program continues to prepare our graduates for success.”

The Core Knowledge Competencies established by the Pennsylvania Key define the knowledge expectations for professionals in settings within the early childhood and school-age fields. The educational component supports students’ preparation for entry into the fields of early childhood and school-age care, as well as professionals’ commitment to lifelong learning through ongoing professional growth.

Penn College’s early childhood education program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The college offers an associate of applied science degree in early childhood education and an early childhood director competency credential.
