Penn College Student’s Aerial Images on Display in Gallery Lobby
Tuesday, April 7, 2015
Aerial images captured by Pennsylvania College of Technology student Maxwell A. Davert are on display in the lobby of The Gallery at Penn College, on the third floor of the Madigan Library, through April 23.
Davert, a senior in building science and sustainable design from Greene, Rhode Island, has gathered numerous still and video images using a quadcopter with an integrated, high-definition camera. The collection of images on display includes eight color photographs of the Penn College campus and 10 videos, offered via two television screens. The videos feature the campus, local area and other venues, including natural sites in Davert’s home state.
The student exhibit coincides with a display of nature photography – “Sim-Biotic,” works by Texas artist Robin Germany – in The Gallery at Penn College.
Davert’s high-flying creativity is featured in the college’s Spring 2015 One College Avenue magazine. Using the social media name “magicwake,” a nod to his enjoyment of magic and wakeboarding, Davert’s images have gained a following among the Penn College community and beyond.
When asked why he thinks viewers find the images so mesmerizing, he said, “It’s unique to be able to see places from the sky like this without having to rent a helicopter.”
While he has honed his camera-operating talents capturing “basically every angle of the Penn College campus,” Davert’s favorite place to fly his quadcopter remains “back home at Johnson’s Pond.”
Davert is on target to earn a Bachelor of Science in building science and sustainable design in May. He earned associate degrees in architectural technology and building construction technology in 2012.
After graduation, he plans to return to Rhode Island and parlay his academic degrees and camera talents into an innovative career.
Located on the third floor of Madigan Library, The Gallery at Penn College is open Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2 to 7 p.m.; and Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to serving as an educational resource for Penn College students and a cultural asset to the college and community, the gallery is dedicated to promoting art appreciation through exhibitions of contemporary art.
