Penn College Engages in STEM Awareness in Tioga County

A biology professor and an assistant dean from the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications at Pennsylvania College of Technology presented at the first STEM Awareness Career Day, held recently at Wellsboro Area High School’s administration building.

Conducted by the Tioga County Development Corp. in conjunction with Shell Appalachia and several other organizations, the event drew approximately 530 Tioga County eighth-graders from all three county school districts – Northern Tioga, Southern Tioga and Wellsboro.

Justin M. Ingram, assistant professor of biology (anatomy and physiology), and Michael J. Reed, assistant dean of sciences, humanities and visual communications: liberal arts and sciences, were among educators offering insights into the exciting opportunities available in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

ReedIngram holds a doctorate in neuroscience from Penn State. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology/chemistry and an Associate of Applied Science in nanotechnology from Lock Haven University. Aside from teaching, Ingram conducts research that focuses on design and application of ion sensing nanoparticles in the mammalian brain. He joined Penn College’s faculty in August 2013.

Reed, former head principal at Williamsport Area High School and former director of the SciTech High School, a STEM magnet school in Harrisburg, has been employed at Penn College since July. He earned a Master of Education and school counseling certification from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in secondary education from Clarion University.

Reed’s school administrative certifications were awarded through Penn State. He is completing doctoral studies through Drexel University with a concentration in educational leadership.
