Wildcat Women Get First Hoops Win, End Third in Tourney

A third-place finish by the women’s basketball team in the Albany College of Pharmacy Panther Tip-Off Tournament highlighted the week for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletics.



Women’s Basketball
After falling to the host team on Nov. 22, the Lady Wildcats rebounded the following day with a 91-74 win over Briarcliffe College for their first win of the young season. Charese Bova, of Beech Creek, notched her second double-double in as many days with 22 points and 15 rebounds while Jamie Steer, of South Williamsport, poured in 26 points. Also scoring in double figures for Penn College were Alicia Ross, of Williamsport, with 17; Danielle Mowery, of Shamokin, with 14; and Hannah Schoenly, of Hamburg, with 12. The Wildcats opened a 9-0 lead early and led 50-42 at the half. A 10-1 run to start the second half all but sealed the win. Penn College controlled the boards, holding a 52-31 edge in rebounds. For her efforts, Bova was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Back in action at home on Tuesday, the Wildcats fell behind by 15 points during the first half and dropped a 69-59 decision to Alfred University to drop to 1-3 overall. Bova scored 13 points and pulled down 27 rebounds while Steer scored 11 points and Ross added 10.

Men’s Basketball
In its North Eastern Athletic Conference opener on Nov. 23 in Washington, D.C., against Gallaudet University, Penn College lost, 85-50. Bryce Lonsway, of Tiffin, Ohio, topped the Wildcats with 11 points. The game was tied three times early on and Penn College led twice before the home team pulled away.

On Tuesday at home against Alfred University, Kevin Laurence-El, of Milton, scored 17 points and Tom Ross, of Williamsport, added 12, but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats lost, 68-61, to fall to 0-5 overall. Penn College showed some good signs during the game as it used an 11-0 run late in the first half to take a 31-28 lead at the intermission. The Wildcats fell behind in the second half, but got to within one at 62-61 with 3:12 remaining before being shut out the rest of the way.
