Hopeful of improvement over its ninth-place finish of a year ago in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, the Pennsylvania College of Technology golf team placed eighth among 22 teams during two-day competition on Penn State’s Blue Course that ended Tuesday.
Daemen College claimed its second straight title with a final score of 608 and was followed by Rochester College, 615; SUNY Delhi, 623; Cleary University, 624; SUNY Canton, 638; West Virginia Tech, 645; Iowa Wesleyan College, 648; Penn College, 650; The Apprentice School, 655; and NHTI, 656; to round out the top 10.
Individually for Penn College, senior Corey Teeple, of Lake Ariel, finished tied for 19th among more than 120 golfers after shooting rounds of 84-75—159. Also for the Wildcats, junior C.J. Foust, of Palmyra, was 22nd (80-80—160); senior Nick Krupka, of Allentown, was 36th (84-80—164); junior Sam Bubb, of Williamsport, was 44th (85-82—167) and freshman Mike Saccoman, of Kingston, New York, tied for 79th (90-88—178). Zach Meade, of SUNY Canton, took the top spot with rounds of 75-70—145.
Commenting on his team’s fall season against mostly NCAA Division III competition, Penn College coach Matt Haile said, “The competition certainly has been much better. The past couple of years (with Penn College was a member of the Penn State University Athletic Conference), it’s basically been between us and one other school. Now, they (his players) know it’s not just going to be a walk in the park. They’ve got to go out and stay focused, play their best and give it their all. I think it’s going to make them better.
“I need to recruit top-notch players to get them to the college, first and foremost for the education and secondly to be scholar-athletes and compete at a high level. I think it’s going to be nothing but positive (going forward).”
Penn College resumes its season in the spring.
Also during the week, it was announced that Saccoman was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 12 as he shot a personal season-best 77 to take third individually at the Susquehanna University Fall Invitational.
