Inspiring Colleagues, Varied Workshops Prep Part-Time Faculty for Tasks Ahead
Monday, July 28, 2014
In preparation for the 2014-15 academic year, part-time instructors attended an Adjunct Faculty Professional Development Day at Penn College on Saturday. The daylong event – organized by Tom Gregory, associate vice president for instruction, and the Professional Development Office – included a variety of workshops to help faculty hone their skills in anticipation of the fall semester. Keynote speaker John D. Maize, instructor of speech communication-composition, shared "10 Things Not to Do" when connecting with classes, focusing on how to overcome miscues that discourage students from becoming involved and excited learners. Among other topics discussed by participants were media in the classroom, social networking, classroom conduct, outcomes assessment and curricular incorporation of Web tools. The instructors were also treated to an "issues and answers" panel discussion featuring recipients of the college's annual Part-Time Excellence in Teaching Award.
