Three Pennsylvania College of Technology students received first- and second-place honors in the Cake Decorating Extravaganza, a competition held as part of the Atlantic Bakery Deli Dairy Expo at the Atlantic City Convention Center in New Jersey.
Ching Chan, of Milton, placed first in the student Tiered Cake category for a pink cake with delicate lace and bridgework techniques.
Lynette F. Stegmaier, of Muncy Valley, received second place in the student Tiered Cake category for a Chinese destination-wedding themed cake with hand-sculpted gum-paste dragons. Kristina M. Williams, of South Williamsport, placed second in the student Sculpted Cake category for a Las Vegas themed wedding cake that included a roulette wheel and gum-paste Cadillac.
Stegmaier and Williams are among five Penn College students enrolled in an advanced cake decorating course who took their multi-tiered wedding cakes to the Expo for competition on March 30-31. Chan took the class in 2013.
The extravaganza’s student categories are set aside for decorators who have less than two years of experience. The competition was sponsored by Brill, a brand of CSM Bakery Products.
Presented every two years by the New York State Association of Retail Bakers and the New Jersey Bakers Board of Trade, the Atlantic Bakery Expo is the largest bakery exposition on the East Coast.
Fifty Penn College baking and pastry arts students attended the show, where they learned about current trends and equipment used in the retail baking industry.
Earlier in March, Stegmaier’s and Williams’ cakes received first- and second-place honors, respectively, in the Penn College Wedding Cake Competition, sponsored by CalJava International. Chan competed and received first place in the Penn College competition in 2013.
