The Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team won four of its five games last week while its softball team went 0-2 and men’s tennis squad 1-1.
Baseball
A two-out, run-scoring double in the bottom of the 11th inning sent the Wildcats to an 8-7 nonconference loss to Marywood University on Sunday. Zach Weil, of Kutztown, paced the Penn College offense going 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs while Cody Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, and Josh Longsderff, of Columbia, also had doubles and drove in two runs.
On Wednesday in Penn State University Athletic Conference action against Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Penn College won by scores of 6-5 and 3-1. In the opener, Cody Buterbaugh went 2 for 2 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored while Weil went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and one run scored. In the second game, Zach Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, went 1 for 2 with one RBI.
The Wildcats ended the week on an up note Saturday, sweeping Penn State York by scores of 5-1 and 13-0 in five innings to go to 8-2 in the conference and 14-7 overall. In the first game, Tyler Cooklin, of Rippey, Iowa, went the distance on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. Zach Buterbaugh went 4 for 4 at the plate. In the second game, Longsderff tossed a one-hitter and struck out six while Weil hit a two-run homer; Cody Buterbaugh, Cole Weachock, of Pottsville, and Mike Scully, of Middletown, Del., each had a two-run doubles; and Evan Vigna, of McAdoo, had two doubles to pace the offense.
Also during the week, it was announced that Weil had been named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association and PSUAC Hitter of the Week for the period ending April 6. In the team’s 4-3 week, Weil hit .389 (7-18) driving in 12 runs.
Penn College was ranked No. 9 in the first USCAA Coaches Poll. In the Week 2 poll, Penn College again was No. 9.
Softball
In its only games of the week, which included two cancellations and a postponement, Penn College lost to Alfred (N.Y.) State College by scores of 3-2 and 8-7 in eight innings to drop to 5-7 overall. Macie Lucas, of Reedsville, tripled and scored in the first game while Nicole Lo Furno, of Glen Mills, doubled and drove in a run in the second. The Wildcats managed just three hits in the opener and four in the nightcap.
During the week, it was announced that freshman Arika Stopper, of Williamsport, had been named the PSUAC Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 6. In the team’s 6-0 win over Penn State Hazleton, Stopper tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout while striking out seven.

Men’s Tennis
Facing crosstown NCAA Division III rival Lycoming College on Thursday, the Wildcats scored a 7-2 win. Winning both of their matches for Penn College were Nathan Scott, of Canton, Conn., and Jordan Rodgers, of Biglerville, at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, and also at No. 1 doubles, and Noah Stahl and Taylor Herb, both of Sunbury, and Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, and at No. 3 doubles. The Wildcats’ other winner was Chris Morrin, of Morrisville, at No. 3 singles.
At Division III Wilkes University on Saturday, Penn College lost, 9-0, to drop to 2-5 overall; it is 0-1 in the PSUAC.
Archery
Competing in its first outdoor match of the season, Penn College scored well during the Adam Wheatcroft Memorial Tournament at James Madison University from April 5-6.
Wildcat archers took seven first-place finishes – three in individual competition and four in team competition – three seconds and five thirds.
Winning individual titles were Cody Wolfe, of Tioga, in men’s compound; Kelvin Dewalt, of Easton, in men’s bowhunter; and Kendel Baier, of Jersey Shore, in women’s bowhunter. Penn College team winners were in men’s compound (with Wolf; Markus Weber, of La Plata, Md.; Justus Leimbach, of Westminster, Md.; and Matt Cummings, of Mountville), mixed compound (with Leimbach and Nicole Lapinski, of Bloomsburg), women’s bowhunter (Baier; Courtney Deshong, of McConnellsburg; and Kathreen Larsen, of Clinton Corners, N.Y., and mixed bowhunter (Dewalt and Baier).
Placing second for Penn College were Lapinski in women’s compound; the women’s compound team of Lapinski; Abigail Hricko, of Nicholson; and Ashley Baker, of Coudersport; and the mixed recurve team of Gregg Foust, of Murrysville, and Alana Androvette, of Williamsport.
Foust recorded an individual third-place finish in men’s recurve as did Weber in men’s compound, Deshong in women’s bowhunter, the men’s bowhunter team of Dewalt; Robert Heinrich, of Unityville; Matt Lech, of Johnstown; and Chris Lafey, of Weatherly; and the women’s recurve team of Androvette; Julie Carr, of Souderton; and Pam Hartman, of Harrisburg.
