Centennial Mosaic Project Seeks Materials, Volunteers

Monday, April 7, 2014

A mosaic art installation is set to unfold on the Pennsylvania College of Technology campus this spring, and students and employees are invited to join in the assemblage by donating materials and volunteering time.

The Centennial Mosaic, designed by David A. Stabley, instructor of ceramics and wood sculpture, will be created on the south wall of the Physician Assistant Center in the middle of campus. Measuring approximately 17 by 25 feet, the mosaic’s design relates to “social connectedness, paths traveled, dreams and the pleasure of learning through hands-on work,” according to Stabley.

For the mosaic project, Stabley is seeking donations of ceramic tile, marble and mirror.

A detail from a large commissioned mosaic created by David A. Stabley last summer“As far as tiles go, I’m looking for any commercial floor or wall ceramic tiles, marble tiles and or mirror that people may have laying around their houses after a project,” Stabley said. “We will break and cut these up for the mosaic. I would like these tiles and mirror to be at least a quarter-inch thick.”

Donations of supplies can be dropped off at the General Services Warehouse between the tennis courts near the Field House and the Dauphin Hall parking lot. Materials can be placed on a wooden pallet at the main warehouse door. The pallet is marked with a sign. The college’s General Services staff will collect the donated materials on a daily basis.

For the installation of the artwork, Stabley will lead of team of students enrolled in a course titled, “The Art of the Mosaic.” The class will meet from May 19 through June 19, with sessions Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Seats are still available for the class and students are encouraged to enroll. The three-credit course fulfills the arts elective. The course will cover an introduction to mosaic techniques, materials, tools and design, and offer a brief study of the history and techniques of mosaics from various periods and cultures.

Students can schedule “The Art of the Mosaic” class (ART2993-01) through the Student Information System. Scheduling information is available on the Registrar's Office website.

Stabley is also seeking volunteers from the campus community to assist in the art installation. Employees and students are invited to assist.

Questions related to donations of supplies and volunteering can be directed to Stabley at 570-320-2400, ext. 7118.

The Centennial Mosaic is one of three large-scale art installations slated for Penn College’s main campus to honor the institution’s 100-year milestone. The two other installations, one utilizing sheet metal and the other featuring natural materials harvested from the Schneebeli Earth Science Center, will also incorporate student participation.
